Another movie I bypassed in theaters and plan on blind buying. I'll watch pretty much anything with Dwayne The Rock Johnson in it. If he starts doing a lot of kiddy movies where he's babysitting a bunch of rugrats like Schwarzenegger did after his prime that's where I'll draw the line

This movie is insanely fun, and I will be picking up the Blu-Ray.
Here’s my theatrical screening review... Four stars. A decade after losing his leg in a hostage incident gone horribly wrong, Will Sawyer, a former FBI agent played by Dwayne Johnson, works as a security consultant and raises two children with his wife, a combat surgeon played by Neve Campbell. Shortly after he is hired by a Hong Kong developer to work as the head of security for the world's tallest skyscraper, a structure that stands three times the height of the Empire State Building, and moves in with his family to one of the residential floors, he is forced back into perilous action when a group of diabolical thieves set fire to the building in order to orchestrate a heist. Skyscraper is an absolute blast of a summer movie, and it stands tall as a throwback to the days when gloriously implausible action films starring the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, and Sylvester Stallone reigned over the world of cinema. We've got the suave villain with a European accent, we've got a high-tech reflective camera security room that guarantees an inevitable “hall of mirrors” shootout scene, we've got a sleek henchwoman, and we've got some death-defying stunts that keep us on edge even though we know that they're not entirely grounded in reality. Johnson, who has spent the past 15 years perfecting his trademark brand of cloyingly earnest toughness laced with everyman levity in films like Walking Tall, Fast Five, and San Andreas, seems born to hit all of the right notes in this role that requires him to don a prosthetic leg in a solemn manner, to attempt insanely difficult physical endeavors that compel most of us to wish that we had tried harder at the rope climbs during school gym classes, and, of course, to give “The Stare” to several other characters. Campbell, whom I adored during the late 1990s when she was a ubiquitous presence in the Party of Five television show and in films like Scream and Wild Things, is genuinely compelling as a character who refuses to be a stereotypical damsel in distress and who gets to beat up on the bad guys along with her man. I am pleased to report that several eye-rolling moments from this film's trailers do not show up in the finished product. Johnson's “But I'm just a glorified security guard, so what the hell do I know anyway?” speech was thankfully left on the cutting room floor, and his character turns out to be more intelligent in a low-key manner than the previews have led us to believe. Even the centerpiece action moment of Skyscraper, a crane jump that has already been parodied in humorous social media memes, comes across more convincingly than one would expect. Skyscraper is the cinematic polar opposite of the understated drama, Leave No Trace, that I saw at the theater the night before, but variety is the spice of life. I'm glad that I took a chance and walked out on the ledge, so to speak, for this feature. This one does not reinvent the wheel, but it is one of those endlessly rewatchable popcorn movies that is guaranteed a spot on my Blu-ray shelf in the future. |

I enjoyed this quite a bit the first time, but it really didn’t hold up to a second viewing. It’s by no means terrible, but it’s just so damned derivative. It’s like Die Hard except nowhere near as good. And here’s a tip for action filmmakers: when you set your movie in Hong Kong, you have the richest action movie heritage in the world, and a LOT to stand up against

Rented this from Redbox. Solid little movie, but it's MUCH more a disaster film than an action film. There's a few fight scenes but the vast majority of the movie is Johnson versus fiery skyscraper climbing. Just wanted people to know.

That is quite fine by me. I knew from the trailers it was a mashup between Die Hard and The Towering Inferno. What really excited me about it though was seeing Neve Campbell in something big again and I hope it's a sign she'll do more. I just bought Skyscraper today and plan to watch it for the first time soon.

If you're expecting Die Hard you're going to be massively disappointed. As spiderfan said above, it's more Towering Inferno with a tiny bit of Die Hard flavor. I think on that level it's a solid flick, though not my thing enough to own.
