Default Lossless audio vs DTS-MA and True HD

Doesn't it make sense that lossless audio would sound better than DTS-MA or True HD since both of those are forms of compression?

Please use the search function and check the sticky threads. This has been extensively discussed. As you will see, MA and TrueHD are lossless compression. They do not throw out data, they work like a zip file.

I see. So that explains the reason for the decoder. Got it.

All 3 are Lossless. Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD Master are 'encoded' PCM audio...when 'decoded' its simply converted back into PCM...so in theory they are all the same, just use different techniques to get there.

The only caveat is if DialNorm is enabled on the Dolby TrueHD track. Then the TrueHD track after being decoded is not bit for bit identical to the original PCM master. I've seen estimates that DialNorm enabled loses as much as 1 bit of resolution if say the master is originally 24 bit.

There is nothing the end user can do about this. Warner enables DialNorm on all of their Dolby TrueHD soundtracks. Sony rightfully doesn't use DialNorm on its TrueHD soundtracks thanks to the good work of our Sony insider Paidgeek. It's why I wish studios would use PCM soundtracks or DTS-HD MA soundtracks all the time.
