Universal Studios An American Werewolf in London (1981) (Restored Edition)

Coming from Scream Factory. No, wait, coming from Universal themselves!

Source: Amazon

Quote:
Re-discover one of the most gripping horror films of all time with the cult classic An American Werewolf in London Restored Edition. Blending the macabre with a wicked sense of humor, director John Landis (National Lampoon's Animal House) delivers a contemporary take on the classic werewolf tale in this story of two American tourists who, while traveling in London, find their lives changed forever when a vicious wolf attacks them during a full moon. Starring David Naughton, Griffin Dunne and Jenny Agutter, An American Werewolf in London is newly restored and features groundbreaking, Academy Award winning make-up by Rick Baker (The Wolfman; Michael Jackson's "Thriller" Music Video).

Hoping Scream, or even Criterion to get this, but wow, at least we have a better version coming out!

7 yrs since the Full Moon Edition was released. Thought it looked decent when it came out, a recent viewing proved me wrong.

Really hope this has received a new scan and it's not Universal hyperbole!

The listed extras are identical to the original version.

Fingers crossed this gets the treatment it deserves.

It's good to see Universal is sticking to it's annual release of American Werewolf In London...

i reserve judgement until i actually watch my copy, but man this is kind of a worthless double dip.

i mean. granted, i think i got the first blu for $8, but i am so beyond over double dips. a new disc just for transfer seems pointless to me, because if anything, universal doesn't seem to respect its horror offerings.

for me, a ton new extras is worth a purchase if i can find it cheap. but other than that... pass.

Well with regards to Scream, I guess we can file this one alongside The 'Burbs and the Jaws sequels as potential CE candidates some time later down the line...Still, this being newly restored means they would have to go some to put out something worthwhile, given the extras are already fairly strong.

Agree, the current transfer is rough.

Great news about the new transfer.

The current transfer is noisy and sharpened.

I hope the original mono mix has been included because the 5.1 mix sounds quite different.

So, in September alone, Universal is releasing:

The complete Frankensten and The Wolf Man collections
The 8-movie Hammer collection
Remastered AWiL

Shite! All eyez on them.

Universal have been sitting on a better master for this since the bluray originally came out in 2009 and recycled the HD-DVD transfer. It's been shown theatrically, which was the reason the blu was so disappointing when they could've used the remaster way back when. This is Universal we're talking about though.

Wasn't high on my remaster desire list because I like the grungy look of the current BD, but I am a big fan so this is still cool news. Let's see what they do with it.

If I remember rightly. I'm sure I heard John Landis state that the Full Moon edition was remastered.

Guess we'll have to see what this one looks like.

I think this is all in line with Universals desire to release 100 of its titles in 4k by the end of this year.. However I would take it with a pinch of Salt as 'restored' was attached to the previous version and as far as I can see it was identical to the HD - DVD release which came out years before.. Which I believe is simply a 1080p scan done from the same master that they used for the DVD release back in 2000.. Saying that any of my 4K peeps should hold back as I exchanged messages with the director of the doc that's on the blu ray and he said a 4K version of the movie should be on its way.. I know even though I don't own a 4k I will be only getting 4k releases releases from now as they usually have the bluray and 4k disc.

The current release is garbage.

Apparently Universal DNR'd the shit out of the master, Landis realized this and made them add a shitload of fake clumpy grain on top of the waxy EE'd image.

A remaster by the same Universal that recently remastered Apollo 13, The Breakfast Club and Spartacus should blow the old release out of the water.
