Question Receiver to fit?

Okay, I'll lay it out as best I can, and see what kind of responses I get.

Currently have:
TV: Sony KDL-40v2500 Bravia V-Series 1080p
Sony PS3 60GB
Cable: Verizon FiOS HD

Since my current Standard-DVD is a home theatre system which has only 1 input, I'm removing it from the equation. With that being said:

Can anyone help me with a good Receiver (and speakers) which would handle HDMI inputs from both the Cable-box and my Blu-Ray player? A 7.1 system (for future releases) would be desirable.

In the future, I'll also be buying a stand-alone Blu-Ray player as well, but I need the receive first.

Thank you in advance for your help!!

Could you please provide what kind of budget you have for your receiver and what kind of speakers you currently have? Do you plan to change your speakers as well?

For the receiver itself, I'd probably max out at around $700, and for that I'd hope it wouldn't be outdated within 2-3 years...

For speakers, I'm not sure. Probably a total of $500, I guess...

Denon and Yamaha are decent receeivers at that price, perhaps Outlaw.

Can't recommend any speakers for five bills.

For the receiver I would go for low-end Onkyo receiver. I believe the 605 model would suffice. It supports a lot of the HQ audio streams and it has HDMI inputs and supports 1080p signal. It should definitely last you more than 2-3 years.

Thanks Seto... I had considered that receiver. I think that may be the one I end up with.

I guess the speakers will have to wait...

$700 + $500 = $1200

Onkyo TX-SR605 ($400 + Free Shipping)

that'll leave you with roughly $800 for decent speakers...very doable. (get some nice matching Fronts/Center/Subwoofer...you can get by with ok surrounds)

I believe the tx-sr705 can spread a 5.1 signal to 7.1 where as the 605 cannot. This is from what I have read over on reviews and on this forum. I think the 605 just has your rears match their 5.1 rears if that makes sense.

The 705 is under 700 dollars I think.

you are correct, the Onkyo 605 will not post process PCM.

(...but post processing is not true discrete...question is, is it worth that extra $$?)

Denon 2308ci.
Can be had for under $650 including shipping online.
Onkyo is made by Toshiba and only the top of the line model is made in Japan. The rest are from 3rd world countries.
The Onkyo's are actually good receivers, if budget is your main concern.

If you are going with Denon start at atleast the 2808ci which adds decoding of the new lossless audio codecs (DTS-MA, Dolby TrueHD). If you can spring for the 3808ci it will net you 2 more HDMI input ports for a total of 4. However either of these receivers will blow your budget. Street prices of around: $1000 for the 2808ci and $1200 for the 3808ci. If price is a big factor in your decision look at the Onkyos, be aware though that they run HOT!
