The Brothers Grimm reimaginging from Orion will open Jan. 31, 2020.

Gretel and Hansel, Orion Pictures' reimagining of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, has set a date with movie audiences.

The film will will open Jan. 31, 2020, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Gretel and Hansel stars Sophia Lillis, who broke out with the hit 2017 Stephen King adaptation It. It also stars newcomer Sammy Leakey, Star Trek: First Contact's Alice Krige, Arrow's Jessica De Gouw and Black Mirror's Charles Babalola.

Osgood Perkins, the filmmaker behind horror films The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, is directing the project and co-wrote it with Rob Hayes.

The story is described as being set a long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside and focuses on a young girl who leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.

Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Sinister, Upgrade) and Fred Berger (La La Land, Autopsy of Jane Doe), partners at Automatik Entertainment, will produce. Sandra Yee Ling will executive produce.

I'm a fan of Oz Perkins' THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER, and though I was less impressed by I AM THE PRETTY THING THAT LIVES IN THE HOUSE (love a slow-burn ghost story, but there was too much screen time of literally nothing happening here), I admire Perkins' desire to create mood and atmosphere. This sports a decent cast (always a pleasure to see Alice Krige in particular)...just hope I won't miss Gemma Arterton rocking her black leather outfit and crossbow too much!

Have to admit Sophia Lillis looks like she could pass as Cillian Murphy's daughter in that photo...

Yeah they blew the casting of It Chapter 2. Chastain is a good actress, but Amy Adams would have been perfect.

I was hoping it was the sequel too, to Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters 3D, which was an entertaining horror action film (with great 3D pop outs by the way). But the producers were waiting for the actors to be free again for the sequel, but it never happened sadly, despite the first film doing well internationally.

I'll have to see a trailer for this, but hopefully it's really focused on the pure horror of the witch, the candy house and the plan to escape alive before being cooked, as the whole movie, instead of just part of it. Kind of like that Tales from the Darkside movie side plot.
