For anyone who bought the LE Series 1-7 set, like myself, it kinda sucks missing out on these new special features.

This sort of seems like confirmation that BBC doesn't plan on issuing the special set that the UK is getting for the 50th Anniversary with both the special and Time of the Doctor, seeing as how both are included here.

The UK set includes the Five(ish) Doctors Reboot and An Adventure in Space and Time (which is also standalone here in the US).

This set has a exclusive concert and the two Matt Smith Sarah Jane Adventures episodes? Those aren't on anything else are they?

Of course, the 1-7 Giftset did have an exclusive concert just not the same one, I think.

Regardless, this seems like a major cash-in move to include those extras as exclusives when many (most?) fans probably got the Blu-ray gift set.

This certainly does explain the lack of 50th anniversary set, but is also a slap in the face to those that have bought either everything separately or the Series 1-7 set.

The 'exclusive content' isn't so exclusive really as the Proms 2013 is on the 50th anniversary set and The Sarah Jane Adventures* episodes are available on the (SJA) Series Four set. Granted those are only available in the UK, but they're no more exclusive than The Five(ish) Doctors.
So really there's nothing in this set that is only available in North America, unlike the Series 1-7 set which had a bonus disc the UK release didn't get.

I will admit I do like the look of the set and if there's anybody that doesn't own Matt's episodes yet then this is a no brainer.

*This does mean though that this is the first time North America receives HD episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Not much there I care about. I have his Sarah Jane episodes on The Green Death SE, and while Five(ish) Doctors was cute on youtube I'm not really aching to own it.

Even the UK anniversary set has barely anything interesting on it the standalone discs don't have. Weird.

I agree with you, Stinging Velvet. While the completest in me wants the 2013 Proms on Blu-ray, the S1-S7 Blu-ray set from last year included the 2010 Proms on the bonus disc -- of course they are not identical, but they are similar enough that I have no desire to waste money repurchasing S5-S7.

I will be purchasing the standalone Day of the Doctor and Time of the Doctor releases during the next Barnes & Noble BBC 50% off sale, and combining them into one case (probably removing the DOTD DVD) -- that's enough of a 50th anniversary collection for me.

As I look at this new set, BBC Video US basically decided to make the UK 50th anniversary Blu-ray set part of the Matt Smith Blu-ray collection, probably hoping that die-hard fans would gladly repurchase S5-S7 for the "exclusive content" not available on standalone Blu-rays.

Very true....BBC and Warner are really milking DW to death at this point, I knew this when they just announced the S8 premiere as a standalone release...

The Sara Jane episodes are (obviously) on the Series 4 release on DVD, but you can also get the episodes on the classic Who SE DVD of The Green Death...

Is it worth it to hunt for the this set or buy the individual seasons and specials? Are the extras worth it? I like the DW Prom extra but not sure if I would re-watch it. I am not sure if my setup would play the UK ones either. I have a PS3. Thanks!

I have no idea what it's going for now, but it's certainly a nice compact packaging of Matt's entire appearance as The Doctor (save for his cameo in 0801 Deep Breath). It's also the only place You can get his two Sarah Jane Adventures episodes on Region A.

Thanks. I was lucky and able to snag a sealed copy off ebay for $102. No one else was bidding.

Started watching Doctor Who with the first Matt Smith season a few years ago and didn't continue past that for some reason. In the last few weeks I have revisited the show with this set and fallen in love with it! Just the right mix of lighthearted fun and interesting sci-fi concepts to make it a perfect show to watch when unwinding after work. Plus, Amy and Clara are quite easy on the eyes.

Being a newcomer to the series, I was really thankful for the numerous bonus features included in this set. In particular, "The Ultimate Guide" was a very informative overview of the long history of the series. Despite not knowing a lot about the previous Doctors, I was laughing out loud at the clever "The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot". Speaking of old Who, does anyone happen to know how accurate the "An Adventure in Space and Time" TV movie is to the actual beginnings of the show? It was interesting, but seemed a little simplistic.

Just started the Peter Capaldi set and I am NOT liking this Doctor so far. Very different from Matt Smith. But I will give the new series time to grow on me, since different Doctors seems to be part of the fun of the show.

Peter Capaldi was a great Doctor. Like you, it took me a while to warm up to him because he was quite different from Matt Smith's incarnation. So I remember watching the first and maybe second episode when they first aired going 'who is this old guy?' (I am older than Peter Capaldi so it wasn't ageism but the change was a shock).

But I was watching those early episodes just the other day and he is so hilarious and already perfect in those but it just took me time to see it. Which is really the magic of the show. Each of the four modern Doctors have seemed so right for the role. I was always resistant at first but always came around when a new one came on board.

Season 8 of the new Who (Capaldi's first) was a bit of a letdown. Not because of Capaldi. But because the episodes centered around Clara Oswald and her new bf Danny Pink (who were both awful IMHO). It was as though Steven Moffat didn't have enough faith in Capaldi's ability to live up to Matt Smith. He needn't have worried. Capaldi proved to be a fantastic doctor. By season 9 Danny Pink is gone, and by season 10 Clara's gone too. And the show continually improves as Capaldi keeps getting pushed to the fore more and more.
Smith was and will always be my personal favourite Doctor, but Capaldi will impress, I assure You.

Sorry to bump an old thread. But I kind of fell out of paying attention to Doctor Who for a while and missed this set while it was in print. I am getting back into it and rewatching all the modern series. Matt Smith is also my favorite of the modern Doctors.

Does anyone know of a place I can buy this set for a reasonable price or does anyone have one for sale? If not I'll just keep on the lookout on Ebay for a while.

It's thoroughly OOP, but it doesn't really add much over the individual season sets and specials releases.

I know this is a real long shot but I figured I would ask. Does anyone have one of these sets they would be willing to sell? Some really outrageous prices on Ebay for it. Hopefully another forum member can hook me up at a reasonable price.

For me, the big draw was the only region A BluRay release of his Sarah Jane Adventures episodes.

Any big difference in video going from 1080i to 1080p? How about the difference between DTS 5.1 HD compared to DTS 5.1 Master Audio?

The change from 1080i to 1080p means that it goes from the native 25 frames per second to 24, slowing the show down by roughly 4%. I have read that the audio was pitched to accommodate for the slow down though.

Thank you for replying. So the 1080i is closer to the true speed the show was shot at? I really want the complete Matt Smith set but I am not going to spend over $300 for it. The Blu-ray.com reviewer seemed pleased with the fifth and sixth seasons. He just didn't go into detail about 1080i compared to 1080p.
