Here's my take on Allied from the Movie forums...
Brad Pitt plays Max Vatan, a Royal Air Force intelligence officer who arrives in Casablanca in 1942 to be partnered with a beautiful French Resistance fighter, Marianne Beauséjour, played by Marion Cotillard. They are tasked to complete a deadly mission while posing as husband and wife, and they quickly develop a genuine affection for each other during the operation. A year later, when Max and Marianne are married in London and are raising a daughter, Max is informed that his wife may be providing intelligence information to the Germans, and he must act quickly to prove her innocence. Allied is an amazing-looking movie that captures the spirit of classic World War II espionage films, like Notorious, Casablanca, and To Have and Have Not, and it possesses an old-school glamour that is rarely seen in contemporary cinema. Director Robert Zemeckis brings his usual visual flourishes to the table and does a impressive job of capturing the look of Morocco during wartime and the urgency of London city life during the Blitz. I saw the end of the film coming from a mile away, but that's a small grievance in this case, because the immaculately-detailed journey is just as rewarding as the destination. Allied has my enthusiastic recommendation as one of the great films of 2016. I will definitely be purchasing the 4K Blu-ray + Blu-ray set of Allied in order to future-proof this beautiful-looking film in my collection, and I would like for the rest of you to do the same. |

This would've been a better moviegoing experience if it weren't for the trailer spoiling everything before the last scene, but Pitt takes a stock movie star James Bond character and plays the hell out of it. Every look on his face and move that he makes felt very lived-in and real to me. It's always a rare treat to see a movie star actor take a movie star part and play it like a character actor.

Really enjoyed it at Cinema. After CastAway, Zemeckis best film (don't rate Forrest Gump highly). Only fault, characther development in first act was a tad drawn out. Otherwise, great suspense, clever writing and wonderful acting from all involved. 9/10. ![]() |

Very underrated movie. I watched this the same night as Doctor Strange the day I got back from a vacation. I enjoyed Allied ten times more. Maybe that makes me old, or too serious, or just a spy and history fan, but it's true. Just classic movie-making very well done. The very end was perhaps a bit too easy, but still, I loved it. Looked freaking gorgeous too. I prefer real film but when you have a director who knows how to shoot a movie it matters a lot less that it's digital.

This was better than I was expecting but I still felt a lack of chemistry between Pitt and Cotillard ( though she was impressively enigmatic and Pitt impressively pained over his doubt). I love Lizzy Caplan and wished more had been made of her character (although her being so open about her lesbianism in that 40's setting felt flat-out wrong; a lesbian in that period would have been far more clandestine). Some of the sets had an impressive opulence, but too much CGI (a common complaint from me in these times) spoiled other visual aspects. Still, this was an old-fashioned movie with some potent modern sex and violence added to the mix, and was certainly watchable. I'm just not sure how often I'd revisit it.
I saw this on a DVD and would imagine the blu and 4K would look pretty impressive. I have a Sony 4K without HDR, and so I've been hesitant to pull the trigger on getting a 4K player as I've heard HDR is what truly makes the difference...but I've been reading lately that HDR boosts picture quality in unnatural ways and some video aficionados really don't like it; time to do some more research... |

A lot of the critical reviews seemed to say the same thing, but I'm not so sure that the perceived 'lack of chemistry' doesn't work to the film's advantage with Pitt's character's doubts about his wife in the second half. Either way, I'm surprised this film hasn't garnered more attention; I consider it one of the most underrated of 2016 along with Rules Don't Apply.

Chemistry is a mysterious thing, in life and the movies, but I often feel Hollywood thinks throw together two beautiful people and chemistry will take care of itself. And that's not always the case. As much as I love a lot of Zemeckis films, emotion and passion has never been his forte. |

She's great in this. I'm a pretty big Pitt fan but I thought he was kinda lifeless, though. Got better in the second half but I think he took the whole "cold unfeeling spy" thing a bit too far at times.
