This was the Mystery Horror Movie at Regal last night and I enjoyed it! It reminded me of "Arachnophobia", with a little bit of "Eight Legged Freaks",
[Show spoiler] thrown in the mix. The creature effects by WETA Workshop were really impressive for the most part, especially for a relatively low budget affair. Hopefully this does well as I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel [Show spoiler] .The world needs more big ass spider movies. 7/10 |

Only in theaters. Interesting. It doesn't look bad, although I'm not afraid of spiders so it has no effect on me as far as horror.
I like the angle that the Spider paralyzes the victim and then like a tick, it will gulp out all of the blood from the host that it can. If there are no bugs to feed on, is it true a Spider will try to bite a person to draw blood to feed? Arachnids including Spiders and Ticks, both with 8 legs. I kind of like some Spiders. The jumping mini-spiders are cool. I'll move a finger in front of them and they'll follow it with their eyes and body, turning to watch it. That makes them seem smart in a way. Those are cool spiders. |

Sting is the latest spider creature feature to give us the heebee geebees, and boy does it. What works very well here is the apartment complex location, and strong characters. It's lean, efficient, and has some great scare setups. Alyla Browne really shines as the young heroine trying to keep her new "pet" from making the apartment complex her season meal.
4/5....really fun. |

Sting horror in theaters April 12, 2024.
This has to be a record for horror movies in theaters at the same time in history? April 12, 2024: Horror movies in theaters at same time: 7. There are seven horror themed movies in theaters as of April 12th, 2024 in movie theaters. That is pretty good to see. Sting (Horror about mutant Spider) Arcadian (Horror about night monsters) First Omen (Horror about birth) Immaculate (Horror about birth?) Haven't seen it yet. The Lost Boys (reissue Horror about Vampire Gang) Late Night with the Devil (Horror broadcast demon possession, one critic says like Rosemary's Baby) Ghostbusters Frozen Empire (comedy-horror with demonic ghosts) April 19th, Abigail hits theaters (horror about vampire girl) That would make 8 if they all hold their spots in theaters. My theater's getting this this Friday, so I'll see it next week when I have the time. A 91-minute B-horror flick is always welcome.

Four stars
Charlotte, a 12 year-old played by Alyla Browne, feels increasingly out of place in the Brooklyn apartment that she shares with her mother, her newborn infant half-brother, and her stepfather, played by Ryan Corr, who has problems of his own working a thankless job as the maintenance man for the building. Charlotte finds an unlikely source of solace in the form of Sting, a mysterious spider that she keeps in a jar in her room, a spider that possesses a rather miraculous intelligence enabling it to be responsive to the girl's attempts to train it. Unfortunately for everyone in the building, however, this spider grows at an incredibly fast rate and it is always hungry. The 2024 horror feature, Sting, directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, may not win any originality points for its narrative about a otherworldly villainous entity that provides a catalyst for a fractured family to overcome domestic woes, but the titular arachnid, brought to life with a stunning blend of digital effects and animatronics by the same team that worked on Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, is its own reward. Although this screen story wavers indecisively between drama and campy humor, the sequences where the ever-growing Sting uses the air ducts of the apartment building to stalk its prey hit the mark every time, providing some innovative gory images and an undeniably foreboding aura. Be on the lookout for Jermaine Fowler as an exterminator who delivers the funniest moments. Be on the lookout as well for Robyn Nevin, who stars as the ultimately landlady from Hell who also happens to be Charlotte's aunt. Movies about giant spiders never fail to draw me into the web. Sting is destined for future marathons viewing sessions alongside the likes of Tarantula (1955), Arachnophobia (1990), and Eight Legged Freaks (2002). Excellent little creature feature. Hits a lot of familiar notes but most are played quite well. Gremlins and the Alien franchise in particular are leaned on quite a bit as reference points but it manages to never feel stale. Helps that the lighting is quite atmospheric, creature effects are first rate and pacing is brisk. The domestic troubles are played up a bit much for my liking but the final act ramps up into high gear just as some of the characters risk becoming irritating.
Unfortunately my theater experience wasn’t the greatest. Two kids who couldn’t have been older than 12 sat near us and giggled loudly the whole time. I normally wouldn’t care if someone sneaks into a movie but these two were irritating so I let an employee know. Instead of asking for tickets and ID, she just asked them to be quiet (the weren’t after she left of course). I finally loudly told them be quiet near the end of the film and wish I’d done it earlier. [Show spoiler]

I saw it today. I thought it was a fun little creature feature. Enjoyed it a lot more than Arcadian which I saw yesterday. Which felt like a chore. This one seemed to have a lot more fun.
The employee I got my ticket from. Said she saw it yesterday and compared it to Little Shop Of Horrors. And after seeing it. It kinda makes sense about a hungry spider who grows the more it eats. |
