Default Speed - a retrospective

It's the 20th anniversary of the high-octane summer blockbuster - Speed, which hit our screens in June 1994.

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2014/06/1...y-graham-yost/

I came across this rather interesting article about Speed and its production with some interesting things. I had no idea Joss Whedon worked on the movie, but I'm not surprised as Speed has numerous quotable lines like "pop quiz hot shot!"

Speed is one of my favourite movies for a good reason - some great dialogue, tense moments, thrilling scenes, a genius plot, a great cast and one awesome soundtrack by Mark Mancina.

I remember seeing this in the theater opening day with a buddy of mine. Great flick. Aside from the stupid gap jump which still takes me out of the movie every time. Well, that and Dennis Hopper faking his death at the beginning. I'm still not sure why they presumed he was dead when there was obviously no trace of his body(and how did he get out of that garage anyway?). Other than those gripes, I loved it. And I already knew Sandra Bullock was gonna be a star after Demolition Man. Speed just cemented it.

That summer had the 1-2 action movie punch of Speed and True Lies(which also had a similarly stupid jump scene with the two buildings). And that was following the summer of 1993 which had the awesome 1-2 suspense thriller punch of In the Line of Fire and The Fugitive. Man, we had it good back then.

He feels the need. The need for Speed.

I remember seeing Speed on opening night at the theater as well. I saw it several more times on the cable channels a year later. I wouldn't mind catching it again, because I haven't seen it in over 15 years.

Next time you watch it on DVD or Blu-ray, listen to the audio commentary(the one with the writer and producer, not Jan de Bont). It's hilarious.

Man, all these movies being out for 20 years or however long make me feel old.

I still have my old rental VHS copy of Speed I got from West Cast Video yet.

Surprisingly I haven't actually listened to the commentary but I'll give it a shot. I was actually watching my Blu-ray copy earlier.

I just saw this again the other day and was looking for that need for speed line, forgetting it was actually from Top Gun. Speed held up very well IMO. Great action, good story and awesome bad guy performance by Dennis Hopper.

What's worse is celebrating the 30th anniversary of movies like Ghostbusters, Temple of Doom, Gremlins, and The Terminator.

I saw it in the theater with a buddy and we loved it. That, Forrest Gump and The Crow came out about the same time. Loved them all. I actually send away for a promotional poster for speed around the time the VHS came out. It was HUGE, I still have it. It had Keanu on one side and the bus on the other, and in the middle I believe it said "Get ready for rush hour". I'd love to get it framed for my future man cave but that would be a $500 frame job.

Yeah, that was a busy summer at the multiplex. I remember seeing:

The Crow - Decent, but I didn't love it like a lot of people did
Maverick - Awesome movie, it's almost been forgotten 20 years later
Speed - Loved it
Wolf - Sucked
True Lies - Loved it
Forrest Gump - Loved it, but it shouldn't have won Best Picture
The Mask - I thought it was hilarious, but it hasn't aged well
Natural Born Killers - I didn't hate it, but it was nothing like what I was expecting

Speed was an excellent popcorn summer action flick. IIRC, I first saw this on VHS tape around 1995-ish. Great action sequences, especially when the bus successfully jumps the gap between the two overpasses.

I re-watched this for the first time on my HD recently, and it was still impressive 20 years later.

I also like how the continuity between Speed 1 & Speed 2 (very underrated) is kept; Bullock & another character are in both films:

[Show spoiler]The guy whose car is destroyed in Speed 1 is also in Speed 2; in the 2nd film, his boat is destroyed

Oh God, don't remind me. Next year, The Goonies, Back to the Future, Commando, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rocky IV, Teen Wolf, Better Off Dead, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, The Sure Thing, and Real Genius all turn 30.

The good news is the 30th anniversary may finally get us the last 2 on Blu-ray.
