Default Movies That Are Better The Second Time

The Departed and Shawshank come to mind.

I'm watching 3 Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri at the moment. This movie is perfection.

Psycho. I saw II and III first, and was pretty underwhelmed by the original film the first time I saw it. After seeing it like a dozen times, it's one of my all-time favorite films. You notice fascinating new things every viewing. The movie is basically perfect.

Actually, the second viewing of almost any film is usually the best for me because I can relish the experience better. The first viewing is sometimes like feeling around in a dark room, and I can appreciate the details with comfort in future viewings.

I feel this way about most new movies I watch theatrically. Same with blind buys. If a film doesn't capture my attention within the first half hour I'll start to focus on something else and eventually feel a desire to walk away. Haven't done that very often but it has happened. Usually I'll try to give the film a second chance if it's gotten good reviews and this definitely has happened to me more often than me simply giving up.

Get Out is another one I saw in theaters and it got better at home.

I enjoy great stories and these are all great stories.

Forrest Gump is another one to add to the list.

Oh wow. There's a lot of films that get better and better with repeat viewings for me. Off the top of my head The Nice Guys is one that got better a second time. I thought it was OK the first time I saw it but absolutely loved it when I saw it a second time and just gets better with every viewing.

Also Mystic River is another one that I thought was OK and overrated the first time I saw it. Then I watched it again years later and now I love it.

My Neighbor Totoro. The first time I watched it I thought it was okay, but the second time I absolutely loved it!
Honestly, all of Hayao Miyazaki's films get better and better with repeat viewings.

There are other examples, but that's the first one that came to my mind.

I walked out of Kill Bill Vol 1 in theaters. I gave it a second chance on dvd years later and it has become a favorite for sure.

Did you get a refund or something? I was always wondering when reading about people walking out of theaters. Myself never did.

As for movies that are better the second time, The Sixth Sense comes to mind.

A Nightmare on Elm St.

I was about 14 when I was allowed to rent anything and rented ANOES 3 before 1 or 2 (as it was new and kids at school went on about Freddy etc.). Loved it.
Rented the first, didn’t. Obviously not as action packed and Freddy hadnt turned into a comedian.

Rewatched ANOES a year or two later. Loved it being darker and appreciated it was the original. It then always was the best of the series (with a huge soft spot for 3)

I've never given up on a film. Rarely been surprised if I didn't like the first half, but it has happened.

Lucky Number Slevin is in the "it's a different film the second time" category. One of my favourite films, period.

Good call on Miami Vice! That one does stick out. First couple of times I watched it I didn't think much of it all. Then I got it. Its no classic or anything but I still like it a lot more now than I did.

Couldn’t agree more with your list. Heat in particular is a stand out. I didn’t make it through my first viewing when I rented it on it’s release date. Tried again because friends had urged me to, the 3rd time landed and became my favourite.

I didn't see the Kill Bills in the theater but hated them both the first time I watched them. Must have been on DVD. Now I love them and consider them the last good Tarantino movies.

I really disliked Dumb and Dumber the first time I saw it - though admittedly I'm extremely picky when it comes to comedies - although I did find it a good bit more tolerable the second time around. For reference, a comedy I did like by Jim Carrey was Me, Myself & Irene.
