USA Last Year at Marienbad 4K UHD (1961) (Kino Studio Classics)

Kino will be releasing Alain Resnais' Last Year at Marienbad on 4K UHD in August! The description doesn't mention it, but this will likely be another SDR 4K release.

Quote:
Extras

4K UHD (DISC 1):
  • Audio commentary by film historian Tim Lucas

BLU-RAY SPECIAL EXCLUSIVES (DISC 2):
  • Interview with filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff
  • Last Year at Marienbad A to Z, a visual essay by film historian James Quandt
  • Memories of Last Year at Marienbad
  • Toute la mémoire du monde (1957, short film by Alain Resnais)
Quote:
Winner of the Golden Lion at the 1961 Venice Film Festival, Last Year at Marienbad is a hypnotically beautiful puzzle box of a film, and one of the most influential in history. Alain Resnais’s sensuous tracking shots and Delphine Seyrig’s iconic Chanel gowns have become part of the cinematic lexicon, and can now be seen in a gorgeous 4K restoration from StudioCanal. In a large international hotel in the European resort town of Marienbad, with a sumptuous but austere décor—a marble universe with gold paneling, statues, and stiff servants—the rich, anonymous clientele circulates. A man (Giorgio Albertazzi) is convinced he met an enigmatic woman (Seyrig, Jeanne Dielman) the previous year at the same location, and perhaps had a flirtation. A second man (Sacha Pitoëff, Inferno), possibly the woman’s lover or husband, repeatedly intimidates the first man. Their relations unfold through flashback shards that never quite fit into place, their lives a hall of mirrors that never reflect a true self.

Okay this I would actually buy. One of my fav films from the French New Wave, I love how surreal it is.

Probably will be another SC SDR master you're right lol but I sold off my Kino BD a while back so would def pick up a UHD.

I want to be disappointed that it's (likely) another SDR 4K but I can't. I love this film and I really want this on 4K.

This could be a UK release from SC.

Since I have the current KL Blu-Ray from the same 4K master, I'll wait to see if StudioCanal releases an HDR version in Europe in the next few years.

One of my favorites! Wish I could be excited for it though!
After what they did to Fear and Desire, I'll be waiting for StudioCanal. Of course they could mess it up too but it's an easy pass.

My Criterion copy was eaten away with disc rot, so I'll be picking this up for sure.

Same over here. The SC BD is very nice and I'm sure it's in the works now that The Third Man was finally announced and some other former BDs like Kind Hearts & Coronets were upgraded.

Only qualm is the bad audio that'd likely be carried over: https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/search...d%20%281961%29

I was hoping Criterion would release the 4K as I missed out on the original. This one will do though!

Oh, yes. I'll probably end up getting both this and the inevitable SC version.

Since the front cover of the Kino release says "StudioCanal" right on it, why are so many people waiting for the UK version? Wouldn't StudioCanal be supplying the master for both countries?

It's the same master but it's going to be encoded by Kino. They always do their own. Masters will be the same but they will not be encoded the same.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification. I take it, then, that StudioCanal's encoding on their UK discs is considered superior to Kino's in the States?

I think so. I'm personally not the biggest fan of Kino's encoding but I can take it. The UK do have some pretty well-known encoding companies like Fidelity in Motion and I personally believe the UK is home to the strongest encoders in the business at the moment.

StudioCanal is hit or miss, they've got quite a few terrible discs. It's really a crapshoot but there's a chance it'll be not-bad. It's worth waiting though because even then it's got a higher chance of being better than Kino.

Kino has a BD of this and they're pulling the non combo pack route as well here?
