Default Apparently Toshiba is really STUPID

Toshiba Corp.'s (6502.TO) Toshiba America Inc. unit said it will increase its marketing campaign this month for HD DVD, following the recent move of Warner Bros. and other studios to the Blu-ray format.

The maker of HD DVDs said it will launch joint advertising campaigns with studios and "extended pricing strategies" will begin in mid-January.

Could just be an attempt to sell the rest of their inventory without it looking like a liquidation.

Calling in a bit of the contractual commitment from Paramount no doubt. Likely as not the lion's share of that $150M deal called for Toshiba to contribute xx% to these sorts of co-branding campaigns. Which, of course, implies a financial commitment from the studios as well. Thus Toshiba appears to me to be making a last-ditch effort to sell HD-DVD and doing so at least partially on their partner's dime.

Effective yesterday, the HD-A3 MSRP has dropped to $149.99, the 1080p-capable HD-A30 to $199.99, and the top of the line HD-A35 to $299.99. Combined with an extended "perfect offer" of 5 free HD DVDs with every purchase, Toshiba's HD DVD Concierge service, and a sudden 50% off sale on Amazon, it seems this format will not go quietly into the dark.

I'm genuinely surprised Toshiba's stockholders have not forced them to stop the bleeding, especially after how pathetically the last quarter's results were...which led to Warner dumping them.

This can not last.

Well, the mods are human beings and can't be here to catch every little thing 24/7. But what I don't understand is why this site doesn't have filters or whatever installed to automatically edit out certain words with astrixes when they are posted.

I know other more niche web forums that don't get nearly the amount of traffic that this place gets that have this kind of thing in place, so it can't be THAT costly or complicated to impliment. It would make things much easier for everyone.

Toshiba gets a pretty nice royalty with every DVD sold. HD-DVD, the natural progression, probably gives the same royalty. Blu Ray produced films don't provide that royalty to Toshiba, as it is a different technology. Toshiba has a pretty big piece of pie they want to protect, and they have a lot to lose by throwing in the towel.

At first I thought so. Since the announcement, Toshiba has had time tor regroup. All indicators point to Universal and Paramount becoming neutral. So, Toshiba is just adjusting market prices to expectations.

Yes, I know, it's stupid to pretend they still have a chance in this game. But I won't even mention the alternative which might give them ideas on how to screw with blu-ray.

I think this IS an attempt to stop the bleeding. The "pricing strategies" is just another term for "fire sale". They don't want to end up like Circuit City's DivX tech where there were tens of millions of dollars of DVD's that had holes drilled through them, and hundreds of millions in players that were "useless", before being promptly sent to the dump.

Ironically, CC's last-ditch attempt to salvage DivX player sales was the marketing tagline: "But they still play regular DVD's!" Sound familiar?
