Need some help. I'm going to upgrade my AV receiver. I would like to have 1080p upconversion, a great audio sound, DTS HD, & all the new goodies!! What's the best bang for the buck right now? I checked CNET.com and they say it's the Sony STR DG920... Are they right??? I would like to spend around $500.
Is it worth going up to the Big dawg high end receivers?? The Sony ES line? The ONKYO line? The Denon Line? I don't know much about recievers... That's why i'm starting at what CNET.com call the best AV Receiver (SONY STR DG920)... Your input will help!! Thanx |

For $500, currently, I think you can get a Onkyo 706, Yamaha 663, Denon 789, Pioneer 1018.
I would wait for the Pioneer 1019 to come out in a few weeks. The Yamaha 663 is also a great option right now, or the 665 - is the 665 out yet? I think so. Check those two out first. But first read some basic threads. |

try the Marantz SR-5003 or the Marantz SR-6003 these have both DTS-MA & Dolby True HD and the prices on the internet are really not bad. juts a thought , I have had three Marantz setups and they never disapoint, and also have great resale & trade in value.

You should consider THIS VSX03TXH Pioneer Elite for $649.88. I know its a little more than you want to spend, but this is probably one of the best receivers you will find in this price range. Amazon has the Sony 920, but its almost $600 and at that price you can do a lot better. When it was $420 awhile back it was a great value. If you don't mind refurbished products then you can consider THIS Marantz 5003 backed with a 1 year warranty for $539.99. THIS Yamaha RX-V665BL is $500 shipped. I think the Pioneer is really worth the extra dough if you can swing it.

Since this thread already exists and I need some help, I might as well use it.
Years ago I got an open box Onkyo HT-R390 for only $80. At first I thought it was just the receiver but nope, it was for the whole system. I was in need of an upgrade at the time and I had multiple gaming consoles, cable box, etc. to hook up so I jumped on it. It has always done what I needed to however within the last week it just up and stopped outputting audio, video still works, but after doing some web searches it looks like this was common for Onkyo receivers made around this timeframe. Looking around and repair/replacement may have been an option through Onkyo but I have to go pull my serial number when I get home later. But other than that I got some Best Buy certificates and cash for Christmas so I was doing some browsing for a new home theater. First I got an email from RC Willey the other day that the Onkyo TX-SR373 was on sale for $199 but did some additional looking and saw that the TX-NR676 is also on sale for $249. Also a complete Onkyo system, HT-S3900 is on sale for $249. All three state they have 4K/3D pass through (my living room tv is 3D capable, will upgrade to 4K eventually, bedroom tv is 4K capable) As of now I am leaning toward the TX-NR676 as I can already use my existing speakers. The NR676 is 7.1, Dolby ready, network capable, iphone ready (important since my old received wasn't) network ready. Overall it has received solid reviews but a few things stood out to me. One reviewer said it does not play well with LG TV's which my living room TV is an LG. Only one review has said this and I asked an employee at Best Buy and he said he has not heard this which makes me think the reviewer had some kind of issue. Another review said that it's not true 4k pass through, again, only one reviewer said this. I asked the BB employee about this too but he said that it is more dependent on the quality of the HDMI cable you use. Do you guys find this to be true? My mind is pretty much made up but I guess I am looking for input on something I may be missing. I guess you should know that first and foremost I am not super snobby about audio/video quality. I mean I want it to look and sound good of course but I am using it to watch movies, listen to music and play games, I am not looking for theater quality experience or to spend a lot of money. This sounds good for the price, what I am looking for. The BB I was talking to was trying to talk me into something else. I asked him if there was something with similar capabilities in the same price range and he said there was not. Can anyone give me a reason not to get this? Even if it lasts me about 5 years like my last Onkyo I would consider it good for this price. Suggestions and input much appreciated! |

That 676 is a steal!
The htib looks good, but it doesn’t have Atmos or DTS-X. The Yamaha that I have in the bedroom is about the same level as that 676 and I am very happy. You would be with the 676 as well. |

Thanks I ended up ordering the 676. I am just indecisive when it comes to these kinds of purchases and tend to overanalyze things. All of the reviews I read are overwhelming positive based on the price and features offered, just those couple of negative ones I read were sticking with me a bit but those were really the only ones. Gonna go pick it up in a bit and hook it up this weekend! I had $100 in gift cards so that helped make up my mind and this having Bluetooth and being iphone/network ready will be a nice selling point to the wife as far as playing music.
