Camille made its premiere at the Plaza Theater in Palm Springs when the theater opened its doors for the first time December 12th 1936. Sadly the theater has been closed for years, as progress has yet to begin on its renovation by the city.
![]() ![]() (Photos both from the Desert Sun) Came with the silent version on DVD, wonder if that's what George was referring to when he said there would be more bonus features this month. |

The definitive Garbo movie. I'm shocked we're only now getting it on Blu-Ray.

Any word on whether the 1921 silent version will be included as a special feature? Excellent performances by Valentino and Nazimova.

Mr. Negativity is back… despite never buying any of the discs he complains about.
HTF actually gives it a rather favorable review all things considered. |

Come on... I didn't said it wasn't worth to buy.
I just based my comment on Mr Harris score. The transfers looked very decent for SD on SD resolution TV and DVD. For blu ray some limitations can rise. But still worth upgrade to full HD. Everyone knows the very good reputation Warner Classics have with film restoration. It will be the best presentation people saw for this film in 75 or 80 years. |

Looks great to my eyes. As usual, despite the mixture of "less favorable" sources, WAC have once again worked their magic to create a great-looking transfer... for the main feature, at least. Sadly, the included silent version is a poor-quality DVD port with interlacing issues and obviously none of the same restoration treatment. But it's here if you're interested, at least.
Full site review should be up later this week. |

The DVD is from 18 years ago, so it's not surprising the silent version only has an SD interlaced master. IIRC, I don't think any of the silents released on the TCM Archives sets or as extras were progressive encoded except for the two Keaton's.

Interlaced transfer are still often, even for blu ray, for a lot of silent films.
Bob Harris said the 1931 version is on HD, but also said to suspect it's s dupe 16mm. For othet side, Silent Era years ago said the film survived in very good 35mm print, and the softness was a photography intented to hide the age of the actress. https://www.silentera.com/video/camille1921HV.html "Released as an extra feature to the well-known Greta Garbo production, this DVD edition of Camille (1921) has been transferred full-frame from an excellent 35mm print, which is finely detailed and relatively unmarred by print flaws. There is little in the way of speckling, dust and other flaws to distract the viewer, except for a half-dozen or so momentary processing flares. On high-definition equipment, upscaling to full HD, the standard-resolution picture looks filmlike, but also is a little softer in image detail — due in part to the standard NTSC signal of DVD and in part to the source material. Just remember that many of Nazimova’s close-ups are deliberately a little out-of-focus to soften her features on film." |

Both Camille and I’ll Cry Tomorrow arrived this afternoon. I did a little jig when my Amazon delivery driver appeared at my door.
I didn’t know that the 1921 Silent had been included as an extra; that was a wonderful, completely unexpected surprise. And it won’t bother me in the slightest if that second feature doesn’t meet the impossible expectations of some. It’s a century-old film, for God’s sake. It’s a miracle that the 1921 Camille is extant, and as I learn more and more about the era, and the wonderful creations that have, apparently, been lost forever, I will enjoy the silent, and thrill in being able to compare it to Garbo’s version. |

I watched this tonight. The PQ is fine fine fine. Correct, it doesn’t look like an original element but the movie here looks better, more luminous, than it has in 80 years probably. It looks like a beautifully preserved print, which is what it is. I would not say that it’s below WAC’s standards, since only their standards could make this element look so beautiful in HD.

Interlacing for silent films that are not 24 fps is 1000% the correct way to present them because it’s the only way to present them 100% smoothly (on current display technology anyway.) Otherwise, you get 1080p with jerky repeat frames, which has unfortunately become the norm outside of a few cases. Compare Criterion’s 20 fps version of The Passion of Joan of Arc to the one on the Masters of Cinema release - the former is completely smooth because it used interlacing, the latter is the usual 24p jerkiness.
In this case, however, there could be some FUBAR situation going on as Warner has a mixed track record with putting SD content on their Blu-rays. I haven’t seen it so I can’t say for sure. |

Jerky of progressive transfer of non 24fps it's less noticeable on CRT TVs.
Camille 1936 it's not just a case of dupe negative (2 generations away from camera neg), but a dupe negative made on lavender film stock, prior to introduction of fine grain duplication stock. It's a case similar to King Kong 1933. Not even today I can't understand how Kong's lavender dupe neg can look better (if really does...) than a original print shot in 1940's direct from camera negative in a good print stock. I wonder if they opted to digitally restore from the dupe for a matter of dynamic range or due have less damage or for both. Last edited by All Darc; 03-08-2023 at 06:35 PM. |

Got mine in the mail today. Beautiful poster artwork. Didn't realize the 1921 version is on this too. Rudolph Valentino is in it. Had no idea. Great that it's included but too bad it's not at least in HD as is instead of SD.
But this is a great release. Now waiting on Flamingo Road with Mrs. Joan! |

Hey, some scenes appears to look really good :
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...393&position=4 Great photography on silver nitrate. Certainly better than King Kong (also a dupe negative on lavender stock). Now I wonder if Warner could make a better King Kong today with their actual technology. |
