Default Videotaped Concerts In Blu-ray

I was at work and someone mentioned that they were excited for when Sony gets around to releasing Pink Floyd's "Pulse" on blu-ray.

That got me thinking and so I have a question. "Pulse" like many other concert releases was video taped not filmed. So am I correct in thinking that the picture couldn't benefit from a HD release due to the limitations of the source material?

It could benefit slightly from the increased bandwidth. That's about it

Don't expect anyone to release low-def video source material on Blu-ray high-def media anytime soon. DVD would need to be near death.

OK. That was my point originally. I was going to explain to this guy at work not to expect "Pulse" anytime soon because it was video taped. You would sooner see a release of "The Delicate Sound Of Thunder" from 1990 on blu because it was filmed.

The concert film was an amazingly rare thing before tape

There are piles of reasons tape is preferable. First and foremost, a film mag lasts approximately 10 minutes. A videotape an hour. This gives you far more shooting flexibility because you can schedule your tape changes. Not only that, but ejecting and loading a new tape gives you maybe a 20 second downtime. Changing a film mag properly is at least a minute. It also allows the director to run a WYSIWYG operation because he's got exactly what all the cameras are seeing on his board, and the second the lights go up, you have a rough edit already done

The biggest reason is that video was the target medium when it was shot, they had no reason to believe it'd ever be going anywhere else
