Original post:

[Show spoiler]Criterion/Janus Films will be releasing the new 4K restoration of Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas in theaters for its 40th anniversary. As part of their press notes booklet (PDF), I noticed the Restoration page confirms a UHD for home entertainment will also be coming, which will include HDR. This was expected, but good to have official confirmation from Janus/Criterion themselves. No release date yet, but it could come as early as November.

Quote:
RESTORATION

PARIS, TEXAS was shot in the fall of 1983 on an ARRIFLEX 35 BL III, on color negative film.

In 2014, on behalf of the French co-producer, Argos Films, the original negative was digitized in 4K, restored and color graded in 2K. All work was carried out at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna and the Eclair Group in Paris, with the kind support of CNC. Because 2K was the state of the art of the projection technology installed in most cinemas, restoration, grading and mastering were carried out in 2K.

However, as extensive tests have shown that all the information contained in the 35mm material is only fully reproduced in 4K resolution, and as projection and broadcasting norms are evolving in this direction, Wim Wenders and the Wim Wenders Stiftung decided to elaborately restore and color grade PARIS, TEXAS in 4K to coincide with the film’s 40th anniversary in 2024. The 4K restoration work was made possible with the support of Chanel and the German Film Heritage Funding Program (FFE). It was carried out at Basis Berlin Postproduktion, using the 4K scans made at L’Immagine Ritrovata.

The Wim Wenders Stiftung has thus been able to catch up with state of the art norms and make the film available in 4K DCPs for theatrical screenings and UHD for home entertainment and streaming - including an HDR version - for today’s widespread display technology.

Hoping for a great encode from Criterion that missing out on a cherry LSP or FiM encode on the Carlotta won't hurt too much. (The Carlotta releases on November 5th)

Also hopefully Criterion carry over the film's 5.1 mix from the BD. The press booklet only states stereo.

Shouldn't this be in the wishlist thread until it's officially announced?

Didn't you say the same thing for the Columbia Classics Vol. 5 thread I made? The notes page clearly shows a UHD is being planned for home video release. I know you're still upset that your Zodiac thread got moved to the wishlist section, but you gotta let it go dude.

The bluray is quite good. This is a gritty film. I perceive it as having a slight sleepy haze to it with significant amount of film noise... willl 4K UHD resolution help enough to dip again? Maybe the increased color gamut and dynamic range will kick up the vibrant colors some, which are meaningful within the visual nature of the story.

The statement "extensive tests have shown that all the information contained in the 35mm material is only fully reproduced in 4K resolution" seems to be a bit of marketing hype given the "material". Let's see. Will be waiting for trusted reviews before double dipping.

The good news is that Ritrovata only appears to have done the 4K scanning, while Wenders and company handled the color grading themselves.

Pays to be patient, I haven't upgraded since DVD. I’ve almost bought the Criterion Blu-ray dozens of times. I do love this film. Can’t wait to see the new restoration.
