Jack Nicholson returns as private eye Jake Gittes in this atmospheric Chinatown follow-up that’s hit upon “the elusive sequel formula for somehow enhancing a great original” (USA Today). Much has changed since we last saw Jake. The war has come and gone; 1948 Los Angeles teems with optimism and fast bucks. But there’s one thing Jake knows hasn’t changed: “Nine times out of ten, if you follow the money you will get to the truth.” And that’s the trail he follows when a routine case of marital hanky panky explodes into a murder that’s tied to a grab for oil—and to Jake’s own past. Directed by Jack Nicholson, written by Robert Towne and produced by Robert Evans, The Two Jakes weaves an intricate and “exquisite” (Roger Ebert) noir mystery, also starring Harvey Keitel, Meg Tilly, Madeleine Stowe, Eli Wallach, Rúben Blades, Frederic Forrest, David Keith and Richard Farnsworth.

Not gonna lie, I didn't see that coming. Especially with the Blu-ray being bundled with Chinatown so recently.

I do really like this movie but I think I’m good with the blu. It looks solid and you know Kino will screw this up some way.

Since I picked up the UK Chinatown instead of the Presents one, I picked up thr BD of this one a month ago. :-/

Well, at least Kino is likely to release it 1.85 unlike the 1.78 Paramount.

Given how Paramount just dumped the old master out on a barebones Blu-ray and then bundled that in with the UHD release this is really surprising.
I doubt it will have the original sound mix or in untouched quality so I’ll hang onto my LD copy.

Can't wait to see how this looks, the Paramount was already very solid but it could look better.

Love that cover art. How bad can the sequel to Chinatown actually be?

It was nice to revisit the character of Jake but it's no "Chinatown" one of the big disappointments of 1990 releases, but I'll still buy the 4k though it does have it's moments, Harvey k is one.

Harvey is excellent in this (when isn't he?).

This was without a doubt one of the biggest movie disappointments of 1990.

Having said that, in the movie exists, at least let’s not let it be forgotten? Worth a watch for the period setting at least.

Awesome news!!!

Never in a million years expected Kino to spring for new extras for such a limited-appeal title such as this. Very interested to hear from Goursaud on the editing. Hope she addresses the last-minute voiceover and the discarded New Year's Eve ending. I don't bother with commentaries as a rule due strictly to limited movie time but Max Allan Collins! I will make time for that one! Fantastic lineup!

And praise Kino, they've ported over the "Jack on Jake" featurette. With last week's Krull announcement, this marks two major wish-list titles checked off AND two DVDs retired. On a roll!

And oh god, the original poster art restored after Paramount's neutered version. One of my all-time faves (favorite tagline too but with that art I'll forgive its absence). Gazing at that gorgeous slip makes my heart go pitter-patter just a bit.

I'm kinda in awe of this release after figuring that barebones Paramount Blu was all we'd ever get. Not a "great" movie by any means and I'll admit it's still confusing as hell due to questionable directorial choices by Jack, not to mention some considerable pacing issues, but it's nevertheless one I really savor. Love Jack in this role and this genre. Hopefully the 4K'll showcase this flick's handsome visual design to its fullest.

Kino I wanna lick you all over!!! Day uno!
