Did they license this from Paramount, or did Paramount's distribution expire?

This has been available overseas for quite some time. If the transfer is better I'll bite as I never bought it.

Fantastic, '1492', along with 'The Abyss', were the top two titles i've long been hoping would show up. Can't wait!

The European transfer of this (on the German Concorde release - widley considered the best - at least) has its problems, but given there wasn't even an anamorphic DVD release of the title (and no DVD release whatsoever in the US and Canada) if Kino only releases that, it will be money well spent for fans of the film.

This is one of the few Ridley Scott films I haven't seen and have always wanted to. Looking forward to this release.

I first saw this when I was very very young. Scott's hard-edged visual and that incredible score really opened my eyes & ears. It was a very intense experience. I also think that this movie, like Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator & Black Hawk Down, greatly influences the way other movies of the same genre are shot, directed, and produced. The European BluRay looks OK, contrast could be better but I wish Kino would give us a release that will do the movie some justice.

Finally! I’m super excited about this! Hopefully they will include “Eye of the storm” a UK documentary episode that was made during the production of 1492.

It’s highly doubtful, but I wonder if Scott ever got around to putting together his “mini-series” version. Back in 2006, when doing press for the Director’s Cut of Kingdom of Heaven he mentioned they were going back to look at the material for a 4-hour long version, that would premier on HBO. It’s so odd he mentions HBO directly, there must have been some serious talks for him to mention the channel and not just say “Premiere on cable”.

Here’s what I could find from the interview. DVD Review (UK magazine)

"And the other project?

Well there's a film I did with Gerard Depardieu, 1492. There’s definetely a four-hour-long film in that one, so we're looking at digging out all the old material with a view to doing it on HBO first"."

Interesting. There are already at least two versions of it out there: the PG-13 rated US cut, and the version that went out pretty much everywhere else, which is about 5 minutes longer, I think.

The US cut has shown up on Netflix from time to time, and has been playing on Showtime recently.

Some of the BluRay versions I know is this German one that runs for 156 minutes...

And a TFI French edition that runs for 162 minutes

I got the German and the Spaniard blu-ray, they are equal to the French blu-ray also. All 3 of then are uncut versions (long international cut).

The differences in the running time of the blu-ray editions is because of the pal speedup factor.

Regards,

Great news. Years ago, I got a old, Region-free?! DVD of 1492 out of a local library; the print was atrocious, so I never saw more than a couple of minutes of this.

So, it will be nice to see this get a wide R1 release.

I saw it at the theater in 1992, and I've revisited it a few times over the years on VHS, TV, and Netflix. To be honest, it's kind of a mess, but even Ridley Scott's messes tend to be fairly interesting. If nothing else, the score by Vangelis is breathtaking.
