Saw this with my sister a few weeks back and we really enjoyed it. It definitely has its share of twists and jump scares, however, as usually one of the main characters was particularly daft during the first 75+ minutes of the film, which made it frustrating in parts, but overall a very well done follow up.

This is so day one that it's not even funny.
Here's my review of The Strangers: Prey at Night that I posted in the Movies forum a few weeks ago... A family of four travels to their uncle's isolated rural mobile home park to spend a weekend together before the rebellious teenage daughter is sent to boarding school. Soon after their arrival, they are targeted by three masked assailants who play sadistic games before hunting them down one by one for the kill. The daughter, played by Bailee Madison, is driven by necessity to find her inner steel as she and her older brother, played by Lewis Pullman, are pursued in the outdoor darkness with no cell phones or hope of rescue at their disposal. Their viciously murderous attackers are always one step ahead, though. The Strangers: Prey at Night is a sequel to the underrated 2008 horror masterwork, The Strangers, which opened at theaters to little fanfare, but found a special place in the hearts of many of us who did see it. Bryan Bertino, who helmed the original film, co-wrote the screenplay this time around, but handed the directorial reins to Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down), who adeptly takes the time to establish an audience rapport with the family while also maintaining a tautly suspenseful aesthetic from beginning to end. Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) is the most recognizable face here, but everyone in the cast pulls their weight, especially when the deadly stakes of the situation are revealed. The three villains from the original film, Man in the Mask, Pin-Up Girl, and Dollface, are more experienced with their brutal hobby these days, and, as with the first film, their sick pranks and their kills are the stuff of nightmares. I really enjoyed this movie, and I am pleased to report that no-nonsense slasher cinema is alive and well in 2018. Music is used to fantastic effect here, with an eerie John Carpenter-style score ramping up the tension. Several 1980s pop songs are also utilized in wonderfully offbeat ways. After watching the incredibly-lit swimming pool night scene, I will probably never think of Bonnie Tyler's “Total Eclipse of the Heart” in the same way again. The Strangers: Prey at Night uses all of the familiar horror tropes at its disposal, and the end result may seem stilted at first, but this movie lets its hair down in unexpected ways and rockets into the scary stratosphere during the final 20 minutes. Fans of the original 1974 version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will find a lot to smile about during the riveting conclusion. |

Kept missing this to see in theaters, so might have to be a Blu purchase for me. How does this compare to You're Next (the only other home-invasion movie I am familiar with)?
