I keep hearing of only 2 usb ports and a lack of a card reader on the 40GB. What on earth is a card reader?? Is that taking my memory card from my digital camera and plugging it into the ps3?
Can you purchase a card reeader and more usb ports if needed? |

depends on what you use, i always have 2 being used. One for my external hdd, and another for my kb. Youll need the usb hub for games such as rock band. I dont think the 4 usb ports are necessary.

I have often considered the reason by Sony not to include the memory card reader or 2 from 4 USB portson the 40BG PS3.
I use the memory card reader every time my wife and I come back from taking pictures because it is fast and easy to view them. We used to have to plug in the camera with the USB to mini-B cable which came with the camera to the TV. Then go through a few options to read the pictures. Load times were really bad when compared to the PS3. As far as the two USB ports, I have never had more than two of my USB ports used for the PS3. The exeption will be when I use the PS3 to load yellow dog Linux and want to connect a USB keybaord and mouse. Of course their are other options like bluetooth mouse and keyboard, (2) Ps/2 to USB connector, to get around needing the USB ports. Just a few thoughts on the post! |

First time I ever used two usb ports was when I played Time Crisis for one for the remote and one for the censor, but other than a handful of games I don't see using more than the one or two usb ports on your ps3 plus there is always a hub if you really need the extra ports.

I use my memory card slots for grabbing images off of my digital camera. I'd do the same for files on my computer, but I can just do that by sharing the files via my media server app on my PC.
I'm currently using 8 USB ports on my PS3 (60GB with 4 ports standard, expanded to 3 + 7 using a seven port USB hub). - 2 charger cables - PlayStation Eye camera - USB Keyboard - USB Mouse - Rock Band guitar dongle - Rock Band drums - Rock Band microphone - USB Headset for voice chat |

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1176506510405 This would be all i needed, right? I just dont think I care to ever play ps2 games and I could always buy motorstorm on my own because I only truly play sports games and COD4. I think I will go with a 40. |

The memory cards are often used inside things like the Wii, Digital Cameras, etc. They are thin, flat devices, much like a USB thumb drive, but do not have a USB port and have to connect in their own special way. There are currently about 4 major standard sizes, and 1 or 2 seem to be gaining popularity more than the others. It is useful for tranferring files to and from a pc, ps3, camera, etc., it can hold any kind of file, it can even have your saved games on them if you want.
I use mine to transfer files from my computers. They are cheaper now than they used to be, you can find 2GB for about $15 (seriously) and sometimes free. The PS3 can display your camera images on your tv in several ways, and even make them into backgrounds if you want. Although it is nice to have this, you can easily do without it. The PS3 can use the USB ports to read thumb drives, hard drives, etc, and these can do all the same things as the memory cards. |

If you plan on getting the Eye camera consider you will likely want to keep it plugged in a lot if not permanently..especially if you use it's microphone for on-line gaming etc..

I use the SD and Memory Stick (Duo) card reader often on my 160GB (formerly a 60GB). It's definitely a handy feature. Makes the slideshow and stuff easy to show off pictures to friends/family when they visit.
Use bluetooth for my headset (Jabbra or Sony Ericsson) and keybord/mouse (Logitech MX5000). I only put my charging cable in when I need it. |
