Default Want a new Center Speaker

Hi guys, Im looking to get a new center speaker. Right now I have an Infinity setup. YOu can see it here

http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/...97078433377659

I want to replace my center because I feel I need a center with a little more bass and deeper sound. Does it matter if it matches my front towers? Do I need to get Infinity? Can someone recomend me something?

If it's clear, sound, beef up the sub. If you just can't crank it up, the best low-cost solutions (also smaller in size, you have that perched on top of your set) are all going to be a compromise with lack of low end sound.

The Klipshch series has good push, but some are bulky. The box stores have cheaper versions; I'd be careful. Look around for the good stuff.

http://www.klipsch.com/products/lists/center.aspx

You can get a good deal on the RC-10 and RC-52. Remember, on your rig, size is an issue.

id look into definitive technologies speakers.

they have a few options with built in subs to really add that low end content to your center, but they are a bit bulky and boxy.

def tech also makes a lower profile line, the mythos, that are pounf for pound worth their weight in gold.

i have an all mythos setup with a mythos 8 center channel speaker, and wow. its really really really something. the mythos 8 has two 5 and 1/4" speakers and two 5" bass radiators. not speakers, but radiators.

they also make a mythos 3 that has two 4 1/2" speakers and two 4" bass radiators that sounds amazing as well.

those are my picks. but, i like everything to be relatively low profile. i've got a martin logan abyss 12" sub that handles the girth of the music or soundtrack

I've got the same rig in the family room - but it was pricey. The Mythos 8 is very tiny, but puts out tremendous sound. Problem is, it was about $600.

I'm running the Supertowers as well - the older generation DefTech's were too bulky. Nice units, but the sub is underwhelming.

Went wiith a couple of 12" Klipsch subs in the family room. In the living room - where the real HT is - I bypassed the Martin Logan for the JL Audio 13" Fathom. Nothing like it.

But all that stuff costs...

In general, the easiest and simplest way is to use three identical speakers from the same manufacturer. If that is not possible, then invest in a good sub and a video processor to perform bass management.

very nice setup you got. i'd love to get some supertowers or 7000 series mains for another theatre room or something. im running mythos ones for main l/r, mythos 8 for center, mythos two's for surrounds and mythos gems for surround backs. all in all, i'm loving it. but yes, all this stuff does run a pretty penny.

klipsch subs are awesome and i've heard great things about the fathom.

but back on topic, ha, if you afford it, my vote goes for mythos 8

Yeah, its a good idea for all three to match, otherwise that can throw your front soundstage off. Just imagine something running by the front and the pitch changes as it goes on screen, then changes again as it goes off screen.

If there is a bigger version of your current center channel. Thats the way to go.

I'm taking back my Bose system that I bought from Conns earlier this week because 1. I don't know how to set it up properly. 2. The speakers can't be seperated. 3. Too many wires 4. I'm lazy when it comes to setting up stuff

If you want a simple speaker system with no complicated setup, get a single Zvox speaker.

http://www.zvoxaudio.com/

Yamaha and Polk also make more expensive single surround speakers.

1. Don't count on the supertowers for real gut-rumbling sub duty - the sub can pump, but I think the amp is weak-kneed. I get clipping on real hard hits. To be fair, these units are fed by a home theater PC, so all I can run through it is Dolby 5.1 and standard DTS - not the greatest sound source. They do better with pure audio. I back them up with the pair of 12" Klipsch subs, it's serviceable.

2. The Mythos One is an awesome speaker. HUGE voice on those things. We had a block party last July 4th, people were singing along a block away, could hear every word. Amazing units.

3. The Klipsch are deep, can get fairly loud, but can be driven to sloppiness because of weak amperage. My family room is huge; even with four subs, the sound gets lost (can't stage the subs properly, furniture foils any reasonable setup). Blew an amp on one of them after four months, wasn't driving it all that hard. Common problem. They give a three year warranty, no worries. But I thought a 50% failure rate on my purchase was a bit steep.

4. There is no more powerful sub than the Fathom. Not one. I've heard the Hsu, every Klipsch, every Velodyne (other than the 1776), all of them, the Fathom just overwhelms. I came THAT close to picking up the Martin Logan Descent - both Martin Logan and Klipsch make terrific three element subs - but the Fathom just kicks all the air out of your chest when correctly placed in a room. It's way too expensive, but it was either that, or two Descents, I just got the Fathom and ended the deliberations. First thing I did with it the day I brought it home was do the Pod Race and Master and Commander's Shape In The Fog scenes. Ho-lee-smokes

Back on topic: Heck yeah, Mythos 8!

I've got a Klipsch Reference Center Channel (RC-52) and I just love it. One of the first things I noticed when I was watching a film, was someone threw a file of papers on a desk and it made a loud thud. It's definitely been a great purchase for me.

Before you buy anything, make sure your center channel is set up properly in your Onkyo. Based on the photo, make sure your center, left, right, and surround speakers are all set to "Small" in your Onkyo setup menu. That will instruct the Onkyo to direct all of the low-mid/sub information from all of your channels to your JBL sub. If you have the speakers set to "large" that means full range, which your speakers are not. Using the large setting with those speakers means you are simply not hearing the low end, beyond the LFE effects sent specifically for surround sound tracks.

If you do have everything setup properly, and it still sounds lacking, definitely checkout Infinity's line for a center. Otherwise, listen to a bunch of different speakers like Monitor Audio or Paradigm, and change out the whole set.
