![]() ![]() Just a heads up for those not aware of this coming out July 30 from Eagle Rock. I'd say it is about time and will be adding this to my growing collection of concerts on blu ray. I have no doubt it will sound great. Last edited by Deciazulado; 08-22-2013 at 04:16 AM. |

I pre ordered from Amazon for $12.59 a while ago. I have the cd and dvd of this concert but this is from Amazon's description:
"Eagle Vision's new SD Blu-ray range presents upscaled standard definition original material with uncompressed stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound" So it is not a true 1080i or 1080p hd blu ray, just an upscale from the dvd right? |

With rare exception Eagle Rock usually releases concerts on blu ray with pretty good video quality. I do not know what was used to film this particular concert so that might have a bearing on the final product. Amazon is not noted for being terribly accurate in their descriptions and specs either.

This is already out in the UK. Reason to buy this is the uncompressed audio which is superb. The picture as said is upscale and therefore little better than DVD.

As I posted in my review, the box does say SD so no one should be expecting BR quality on the video. However, the Oppo 103 upscales this one nicely. Pretty good for SD. The audio on the other hand is a huge leap from the DVD version. Very happy with this in general. Vocals are crystal clear. Also, the video is no doubt originally SD and not HD. What you see is probably the best that they had to work with. People are making comments that the source material is better but how do they know? They don't, it's all speculation. As the old saying goes, "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear". Some people expect too much. Would you rather have no BR release of this or a BR release with an upgraded audio track and original video? For me I am glad to have the audio upgrade. Kudos to Eagle Rock for providing this audio upgrade even though they probably knew they were going to get negative comments on the video. The audio is also at 24 bit 96 khz. Thanks for doing that rather than sampling at 48 khz like a lot of other releases. They kept the price low based on the fact that only the audio was upgraded. I like that! It's fair. Let's all support Eagle Rock because they are just about the only purveyor of non-classical BR's and if they stopped producing then it would look pretty bad out there as far as releases go. Now I am assuming that all my comments regarding the video are true. If they aren't then Eagle Rock does have their customers to answer to as to why they did this.

PQ is what it is, Eagle was upfront about these being upscales so the people now complaining really ought to learn to read the product description beforehand. I can't fault the audio and given the price I paid it is a nice upgrade over both the DVD and the CD. Shame about the change in aspect ratio though.
I just wish Eagle (or anyone for that matter) would give 1989 Melbourne "One For All" concert a Blu-ray release (with or without upscaled video). A far better live experience than One Night Only (a lot less taped vocals for one thing). PQ and AQ may not be the best but I'd also like to see someone give commercial releases of the 1971 and 1974 concerts at Festival Hall in Melbourne. They may also want to give the shelved footage of the December 20, 1976 concert at the Forum in LA a second opinion. There should also be more footage than what we got of the Spirits Having Flown tour on the 1979 Bee Gees Special. Maybe throw in a couple of the other One Night Only concerts that were given limited broadcasts. |

And Eagle Rock could help improve the video quality quite a bit by simply retaining the OAR of 1.33:1. That, to me, is why these SD Blu-ray releases are very frustrating, because they are taking an already weak image and then compromising it further just to fill an HDTV. Moment of Glory was apparently 1.78:1 originally, but I have a feeling it may have been shot as non-anamorphic widescreen video.

I think some folks are missing the point that I tried to make in my earlier review. I know that this concert was advertised as SD - I get it! My concern is that why would Eagle Rock make this blu-ray with SD quality advertised as Blu-Ray and not upscaled video. Eagle Rock should have invested the time and money to produce a high quality HD version with a classic concert like this by one of if not the best vocalists in the world. For those people who indicated that Eagle Rock made this Blu-Ray with SD quality to keep the price low, I say that they have very low standards as far as quality is concerned. I would have paid $30 for an HD version. They also mentioned that it depended on the source material ER had to work with. I have seen some classic movies that was made in the late sixties and seventies that was transferred to Blu-Ray that the HD quality was so much better than this. Honestly, I already have the upscaled feature in my equipment and there is no difference in picture quality when I compare this concert to my DVD version. I have a Harmon Kardon 7.2 system and the audio of on blu-ray is only about 5% better than the DVD version. So I'm not getting much for my money. To applaud Eagle Rock for advertising this concert in SD is so ridiculous. What would prevent all the other studios from doing the same thing and in the end we may not get blu-rays in HD but SD "to keep the prices low". My take on this if it is not HD then DON'T make it at all!

The whole point is the lossless audio which on my Cambridge Audio 7.1 sound system is great.
PQ is poor as I guess they recorded on SD video so their is no film to remaster in HD. Most of the classic concerts of the era are recorded on video and not film which only a few bands like Queen used back then. Another example is U2 at Red Rock where given the rain it is amazing they got any video at all, but would love to hear the energy of the music on a lossless BD. |

They clearly advertised it as upscaled from day 1. The format on which it was released on is irrelevant. Blu-ray is only a container for whatever content they choose to release. You seem to have missed the point that it wasn't shot on film but on standard definition video. You simply can not make a true HD presentation of material which has no resolution whatsoever above SD. Eagle chose to focus on the audio and that is its main selling point, as are the rest of their SDBlu-ray releases, and in the case of ONO it does so wonderfully. |

I was wondering if Eagle Rock's Blu-rays are all region free? I just brought the 2 bluray set which contains the one night only and the one for all concerts from the U.S Amazon (im located in the U.S). I just found out the seller I brought it from is located in the U.K so I'm a bit worried about it being region locked.
