This is already out in the UK. Reason to buy this is the uncompressed audio which is superb. The picture as said is upscale and therefore little better than DVD.

As I posted in my review, the box does say SD so no one should be expecting BR quality on the video. However, the Oppo 103 upscales this one nicely. Pretty good for SD. The audio on the other hand is a huge leap from the DVD version. Very happy with this in general. Vocals are crystal clear. Also, the video is no doubt originally SD and not HD. What you see is probably the best that they had to work with. People are making comments that the source material is better but how do they know? They don't, it's all speculation. As the old saying goes, "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear". Some people expect too much. Would you rather have no BR release of this or a BR release with an upgraded audio track and original video? For me I am glad to have the audio upgrade. Kudos to Eagle Rock for providing this audio upgrade even though they probably knew they were going to get negative comments on the video. The audio is also at 24 bit 96 khz. Thanks for doing that rather than sampling at 48 khz like a lot of other releases. They kept the price low based on the fact that only the audio was upgraded. I like that! It's fair. Let's all support Eagle Rock because they are just about the only purveyor of non-classical BR's and if they stopped producing then it would look pretty bad out there as far as releases go. Now I am assuming that all my comments regarding the video are true. If they aren't then Eagle Rock does have their customers to answer to as to why they did this.

PQ is what it is, Eagle was upfront about these being upscales so the people now complaining really ought to learn to read the product description beforehand. I can't fault the audio and given the price I paid it is a nice upgrade over both the DVD and the CD. Shame about the change in aspect ratio though.
I just wish Eagle (or anyone for that matter) would give 1989 Melbourne "One For All" concert a Blu-ray release (with or without upscaled video). A far better live experience than One Night Only (a lot less taped vocals for one thing). PQ and AQ may not be the best but I'd also like to see someone give commercial releases of the 1971 and 1974 concerts at Festival Hall in Melbourne. They may also want to give the shelved footage of the December 20, 1976 concert at the Forum in LA a second opinion. There should also be more footage than what we got of the Spirits Having Flown tour on the 1979 Bee Gees Special. Maybe throw in a couple of the other One Night Only concerts that were given limited broadcasts. |
