What are some discs from the early days of the format that looked good at the time but nowadays don't look very good.
Some include for me Con Air, interview with the Vampire, Transporter and others. |

It's amazing to look back on reviews from the beginning of the format, when blurry old 1080p transfers only intended for use on DVDs were being dumped onto BD and people were drooling over them.
The bar has been raised over a decade into the format. That said, there are some early BDs that still hold up. |

In terms of catalog there's probably very little from the first few years of the format that holds up (so I guess 2006-2010'ish?). Some of the new films early to the format probably hold up OK, but catalog not so much. At some point studios did start getting a clue about how not to use DNR and started investing more in new remasters (rather than dumping old DVD masters onto blu-ray). Though all of the labels still occasionally release a dud for one reason or another. |

I guess I'm going to be that guy here, but the 2010 release of the Exorcist looks good. Not only good, but damn good. Watched it a few months ago for the first time and would have guessed it was recently remastered.

Sleepy Hollow, The Mask, Crash (2005), and Reservoir Dogs haven't been reissued since their original 2006-2008 Blu-rays, and boy do they need it.

THE ABYSS isn't even on Blu-ray, and the DVD is from a 1990 era laserdisc master.
And yet, James Cameron is considered "the high tech guru." What a joke. |

The list is too long. Most discs released before 2010 don't look great to me. When buying discs now, I tend to be a little suspicious of ones released before 2012/13. Seems like an arbitrary cutoff, but I did notice that more releases around that time came from new 2K or 4K restorations.

The Dark Knight is the ultimate example. When the blu-rays came out, people raved about how its blu-ray transfer "IZ TEH BEST". As time passes and people's opinion about edge-enhancement declined, now people are denouncing the transfer as edge-enhanced trash, especially since the 4K Blu-ray came out.
