Does anyone know if the version of The Night Manager on Vudu and Amazon (and soon to be included in Prime, I gather) is the full BBC version? If I can stream it uncut, then I don't need to pay $45 for the Blu-ray...but if Blu is the only way to see it uncut, I might need to spring for it.

The versions on iTunes are uncut, I believe, so I imagine the same would be true of Vudu and Amazon (since they all have the TV-MA rating)?
One thing I'm intrigued about, and is slightly bugging me, is whether or not this was shot at 25fps or 24fps. The UK blu and UK digital versions run to ~5h44 (the blu is 1080i/50), but the digital releases in the US and Canada run to ~6h. I've compared the first episode from each and there's definitely speedup a la PAL/NTSC. The US version looks sharper, but that could just be the encode. Which is correct? IMDb has let me down by not saying! ![]() |

iTunes was definitely advertised as the 'uncensored' versions - I have the first episode on US iTunes and I'm pretty sure it's got the language and nudity uncensored in it. Sony have been pretty good recently at putting up uncensored/TV-MA versions of their TV shows (e.g., Better Call Saul).
I'm not sure if there's anything other than the strong language and nudity that would warrant giving the episodes a TV-MA for over TV-14, so I imagine AMC broadcast it with a TV-14 rating. |

The UK release is 25fps and I don't see Sony getting that wrong.

Nominated for 6 Emmys: Best Limited Series, Directing (Bier), Writing (Farr), Actor (Hiddleston), Supporting Actor (Laurie), and Supporting Actress (Coleman).
Would love to see Laurie and/or Coleman win. Hiddleston was a little too blank, by design of course, but I didn't think he was award-worthy. |

Why is the rating listed as TV-14 if this is supposed to be unedited as it was on the BBC? I really, really want to own this show, but I hated how AMC butchered it (I've seen both the BBC and AMC version so I know which one I prefer). Anyway, if anyone could give me any info about why it is being listed as TV-14 but being advertised as unedited please let me know. By the way, this is my first time posting, so I'm sorry if I sound overly formal.

See, whilst back covers aren't guarantees about things it looks like the run time is longer than the UK release by the same margin as PAL/NTSC time differences. And this release is also coming from Sony. So either they sped the UK blu release up (not sure why they would do this, unless they were lazy and used the same masters for DVD and blu, since the UK DVD - being PAL - would be the shorter of these two versions, identical to UK broadcast) or they have slowed the US release down (not sure why they would do this, unless they wanted the US DVD and blu to match in run time?).
I still suspect that the series was shot at 24fps and Sony have for whatever reason forced the UK blu to match the other UK releases rather than be at the correct speed (and in the process give the UK an inferior 1080i/50 release rather than the 1080p/24 it looks like the US might be getting). Still no idea how to tell which is 'correct' though! |

Easiest way is to do what the producers of the UK Arrow BDs said they did to confirm the correct speeds for the UK Dekalog BD - compare a few scenes with music to those same pieces of music on the soundtrack album. One BD will match and one BD will sound sped up or slowed down.
I will say that I watched the BBC versions and they did not appear to have PAL-speedup, and I'm extremely sensitive to it. I still suspect this is a similar case to "Wallander," a series shot in HD at 25fps, requiring it to be released at 1080i/50 in the UK to preserve the original speed. But it's always possible I'm wrong. Last edited by James Luckard; 07-18-2016 at 06:37 AM. |

Thank you so much for putting me out of my misery - it looks like I was entirely wrong and you are right, as the theme music from the soundtrack is perfectly in sync with the UK versions. I guess the episodes must be slowed down for US release since 1080i/50 content is probably never released in North America?
