Medea, the powerful daughter of the king, falls in love with Jason and helps him in his fight for the Golden Fleece. The Argonauts flee across the sea with the furious people of Kolchis in hot pursuit.

There Master Liang plays a princess, who hangs from the ceiling by a rope, which she threatens to cut if the officers don't stop the execution of her father, the emperor. Some days later the girl rescues a 4 year old boy from his confinement by some child-traders. Believing he is an orphan, she brings him to Wang, who she knows is longing for a male inheritor. But the boy is actually kidnapped from a wealthy family, and soon Wang is accused of the robbery and sentenced to death. To persuade Master Liang to help her rescue Wang, the girl climbs the roof of the opera house, ties a rope around her leg and hangs to it from the ceiling. She threatens to cut the rope, and when she actually does this, Master Liang throws himself forward and catches her. He is moved by her action and decides to do whatever he can to help the girl rescue Wang.

She then returns to Malthe, and a close bond soon develops between Emma and Malthe. Meanwhile, the police are finally called and begin their investigation. Emma writes a ransom note for $2,000, and her father pays it. Emma uses the money to buy Malthe some new clothes and to treat him to a "Russian" feast at the Grand Hotel. Just as they are leaving the hotel, the police finally catch up with them. Malthe believes the police want to return Emma to the Bolsheviks so he flees with her into the sewers.

When the old couple is denounced for sheltering the girl and arrested by the Germans, Misha flees through the woods heading east. Along her journey seeking out her parents, she lives and survives with pack of wolves and crosses Germany, Poland reaching Ukraine. When she sees that Brussels have been released by the allied force, she returns to her hometown and reaches it in March 1945 almost dead, sick and with lice and malnourished. However, Ernest identifies the girl that does not accept that her parents had died in the concentration camp of Sonnenburg.

Yet, once father is sent away "on business" -- this being the explanation Malik and his older brother (Davor Dujmovic) are given for their dad's departure --, the family is forced to struggle, both financially and psychologically, can hardly afford luxuries such as a "football."
Described as a "very human comedy," which includes some comical episodes involving Malik's circumcision, tendency to sleepwalk, and first girlfriend. Yet, perhaps better described as a comedy/drama, the film having a rather serious side to it too. Seen mostly through the boy's eyes. Highly praised; winner of the Best Film award at the Cannes Film Festival.
