Default worst happened -- but time for an upgrade, help needed!

I've had this tv since day 1.

I'm coming from Sony XBR-65X900B, it was on my TV stand. My daughter decided to do her daily pull-up exercises using the circular base as leverage and it toppled the unit onto my solid oak coffee table. Lots of force! THANKFULLY - SHE IS OKAY! The TV... well... not so much!! anyways...

But now I need to upgrade! Yay!

New to this, but I'm looking for something that is 4K and 3D (passive preferably) in the $2-5K range. Used mostly for film and watching YouTube with occasional gaming... Looking at going 85''+

Any suggestions on projectors?

OP is not asking about TVs. They are asking about 4K/3D projectors.

Are you looking for a traditional long throw projector that mounts to the ceiling at the rear of the room or an Ultra Short Throw which you place 1-2 feet in front of the screen?

Check out new 4K LG Laser projector Robert has at Value Electronics He has a thread about it on projector forum somewhere.

Thank you for getting back to me. Honestly, I'm trying to weigh my options here. I've got the space for both. Just really wanting to keep my 3D collection without compromising 4K.

Do you have anything in mind?

Sorry for the delay, been extremely busy! haha

3D was extremely important to me as I didn’t want to make my 3D collection obsolete. I chose an UST as I didn’t want to do the traditional mounting, long cable runs, light bulb changes, etc.. and liked the convenience of a projector that basically is set up just like a TV. I removed the old TV and multimedia stand, hung the screen and placed the projector where the TV and stand use to be. Connected my AVR, AppleTV and Blu-Ray player. It’s that simple.

I initially had an Optoma P2 but the 3D was too dark as the image wasn’t bright enough to compensate for the glasses. However, there was zero crosstalk with the Active DLP link 3D.

I returned the Optoma and opted for the Epson LS500 as a couple reviewers wrote that it had the best 3D performance of any home projector (UST and long). This is the brightest UST projector on the market and best 4K image (not native) out of the USTs that have 3D. Samsung and LG UST do not support 3D. VAVA, Optoma and Epson do support 3D.

When in Vivid or Bright Cinema mode, the light output is at 100%. This was designed to help prevent washed out images when watching during the day where projectors typically have trouble.

By using either of these modes at night, this is the extra brightness needed to compensate for the 3D Active RF glasses resulting in the same bright and colorful 3D from a 3D TV. However, their is occasional crosstalk on material known to have crosstalk on active 3D TVs which might be an issue for people use to passive 3D.

Another note... when watching 4K at night in cinema mode, the light output is only at 50% resulting in very minimal fan noise. But when the projector is at 100% light output (Vivid and Bright Cinema mode) the fan is fairly loud. It gets drowned out by the AVR, but in quiet scenes, you will hear the fan.

The other small issue is the Active RF glasses. The best available on Amazon from Xpand are terrible. I had the Xpand Active DLP for the Optoma and they were the best 3D glasses I ever used. So naturally I ordered the Xpand RF version only to find out they are not nearly as nice. Frame is flimsy, lenses scratch easily, does not fit well over glasses. Unfortunately, I haven’t found anything that would be better yet.

Yeah, I've got close to 200 3D titles and I'd really like to not leave these behind. I've noticed a ton of people are just dumping them and not looking back... I actually really enjoy the immersive nature.

I've seen the reviews from a few people on YouTube for VAVA UST. and a decent audio for stock but will be AVR. I've noticed the love for Epson and Optoma units. All the chatter about Epson's color is on my radar, I'm really trying to find out more about what type of players support the passive 3D. I understand that active has better resolution and clarity. But honestly... I cannot tell the difference. haha

cmay91472 - Thank you SOOOOO much for taking time out to let me know. I'm just having a hard time and really don't want to return a unit because it's not to my liking or is garbage (subjectively).

No problem at all.

With projectors, they will almost always be Active 3D. I don’t believe there are any passive 4K/3D projectors. There was an Epson Passive 1080P that was a dual stack (two projectors stacked on top of each other) since it requires two projected simultaneous images for passive. There may have been a couple others from off brands that also used the two projectors stacked on top of each other back when 3D at home was at its peak.

You're not going to find passive unless you put something together yourself. All of the 3D home theater projectors available are active 3D. But honestly, I don't know why you would want passive. Active 3D on a tv and active 3D on a projector are two totally different things, so if you're expecting flickering and crosstalk like you would see on a tv that isn't the case at all. Active 3D on a DLP projector has better than theatrical cancellation. It's spectacular.

Thank you, Energy Crisis. I'm now trying to narrow it down to a specific A3D uint. Do you have any specific units that you'd recommend between the price range of $2-5k?

I really do appreciate all the comments!

Out of my price range, so I can't really recommend anything. I'd suggest checking reviews from reputable sites and going from there.

This list is a good place to start: https://www.projectorcentral.com/best-projectors.cfm

Out of your price range but I love the 3D image from my JVC NX7 projector, and maybe the NX5 would fit on the higher end of your budget. I started with the Xpand 105RF glasses and worked nicely but broke in half right at the nose bridge of the glasses. So I needed glasses and thankfully I have had great results from HiShock 3D glasses. I prefer the Black/High Diamond version because of the thicker framework to block the ambient side light. Seems like they have gone up in price but their thin frame are still relatively cheaper option. Side ambient light could be an issue for some but they still perform great for my 3D needs. Plus they worked with the RF emitter that came with my Xpand glasses and they come with 3 or 4 different nose pieces for a better facial fit

Thank you -- I've been checking out the NX5 & 7, they really don't give me much room to play if I'm having to purchase glasses. Again, if I'd have to do something like this. I may just have to do them in pieces. Thank you, Silentbob!
