I was reading an article on IGN that says if you're playing a PS3 game that is in 720p on a TV that only supports 1080i that it will downscale it to 480p.
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/746/746282p1.html How many HDTVs have 1080i and not 720p? Is this from the very early adopting days? I can't find any televisions that do this currently. Any input on this is greatly appreciated. |

For example: My parents' TV is a Sony XBR400, which is technically a first or second generation HD Monitor. Pretty early. It has component inputs on the back and it says 480i, 480p, and 1080i. No 720p compatibility whatsoever. On the other hand, most newer sets after that accept 720p as well and it's usually identified clearly on the hardware and/or in the literature. Kind of weird. In any event, the folks in a situation like that simply should set the PS3 to 1080i and forget about it. |

A lot of CRT TVs will take the 1080i input and convert it to 540p before displaying. I have a link to some articles which test TVs if they deinterlace 1080i material correctly, but they are on my home PC. If I remember, I will post them later.

I'm really looking to see how may tvs accept 1080i but not 720p, as I didn't think there were many. JTK has confirmed my suspicions that this was only on very early sets. |

Most CRTs. There are very few CRTs that actually accept 720p, and only a handful can display it. All fixed pixel displays - for the most part - have no problem accepting either.

I'm not an expert on this at all but I've always thought it was the opposite, most CRT HDTV's do accept 720p. I know my XS955 and quite a few other HD CRTs accept 720p. I know for certain CRT's that can actually display 720p are extremely rare and are used in professsional settings, labs, etc.
