Default Would Like Your Opinion

Greetings All,

I own the following:

Samsung 52" 120 HZ LCD Model LN-T5271
Samsung 650 Watt 7.1 Model HT-AS720ST (Running in 5.1)
Direct TV HR20-700
Xbox 360
Sony PS3
Toshiba HD-DVD Model HD-A30 (Sorry....Huge Batman Fan)

TV has 3 HDMI Inputs
Receiver has 2 HDMI Inputs, 1 HDMI Output and 2 Digital Optical Inputs

PS3 connected to TV via HDMI and receiver via digital optical.
HD DVD player connected to TV via HDMI and receiver via digital optical.

XBOX 360 connected to receiver via HDMI
DirecTV connected to receiver via HDMI

Receiver connected to TV via HDMI

I spend more time watching Blu Ray movies. If I had to rank my own equipment's use, it would go PS3, Xbox 360, Direct TV and HD DVD last.

I connected my PS3 and HD DVD player directly to my TV because I was concerned if I connected them to my receiver, that I would lose pitcture/sound quality while watching BD/HD content. After doing some light reading in the forums, I get the feeling that I might be better off connecting both to my receiver, then out to my TV via HDMI cables.

Your opinion on how you would set this equipment up, considering my rank of my own equipment, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Oh definitely go PS3 --> receiver ---> TV!

You won't lose any quality and with a PS3 you can get uncompressed sound over HDMI in 5.1 surround (over optical you're limited to 2.0 PCM or 5.1 DD or DTS, the spec doesn't allow the bandwith for uncompressed surround).

As HDJK stated, your best bet would be to run your PlayStation 3 through the receiver. You would make a significant sound gain and the PQ would not drop. Taking a brief glance at your HT setup, Samsung basically states that this was designed for a 1080p Blu-ray setup. I can't see you going wrong here.

im sorry but the receiver cannot process HD audio through the HDMI. Optical cable is his best bet.

Only way for Lossless audio is to use a player with Multichannel Analog outputs to the analog inputs on the receiver.

So it does not make a difference if he runs the HDMI to the tv or through the receiver (best to go straight to the TV). Optical is just fine.

If his PS3 is set to LPCM, cant you set the receiver to "direct" mode and have it play the HD audio? This way the receiver is just passing the decoded material that is being sent from the ps3??

I have HD audio with 7.1 channels. HDMI is the best for audio and video. In fact it supports better quality and more channels than optical.
You might want to check it again, maybe it is only that specific receiver.
But I know mine accepts HD audio via HDMI.

*******UPDATE 2/11/08*******

Dissatisifed in discovering what my HTIB could not do, I picked up the Onkyo TX-SR705 on sale for $650 along with a pair of Polk floor standing fronts (Monitor 50's) and a Polk center (CS-1) over the weekend.

Installed new 5.1 setup using my existing HTIB fronts as my "new" surrounds, connected PS3, HD-DVD and DirecTV HDDVR to the 705 HDMI input via 120hz rated Monster HDMI cables and out to the LN-T5271 via same cable. WOW, what a difference!!! My girlfriend and I stayed up late watching Dave Matthews and NIN on BD. The sound in Dolby True HD with the upgraded speakers was well worth the investment.

Thank you all again very much for your quick response, input, advice and kindness. It's because of you all that I was able to walk in CC and discuss/purchase HT equipment intelligently. I feel like I could now return the favor and "help a newbie" = )
