Default Blu Ray vs. DVD on SD TV

Will there be any discernible difference in quality of a Blu Ray Disc versus a standard (widescreen/letterboxed) DVD if you are playing both of them on a standard-definition (4:3) television?...

I only ask because my parents have no concept of technology. My dad came over to my house recently and loved Guitar Hero 3 on my 60" 1080p, so my mom wants to get it for him for his birthday. She didn't understand that you couldn't just buy GH3, and that you actually needed a CONSOLE to play it on...

...I'm trying to build up arguments to justify her spending the $270 cost difference between a PS2 and a PS3 to go with the PS3. My p's have only standard-def TVs (although my dad has been talking for years about wanting a decent tv set).

So, yeah - back to my original question....that's why I was asking. Anyone know the answer???

Actually, when I bought my PS3 last December I only had an SDTV. I didn't get a HD set until a couple of months ago. To answer your question, yes, I definitely saw a difference. It's no where near SD to HD but I could see it. There was just more detail and better coloring. And think of it this way, some day (could be years, who knows) they might get an HDTV and then they'll be set.

People claim they see a difference on standard TVs, but it's going to be 480 resolution no matter if the input is the PS2 or the PS3. However, if your dad is thinking of getting a better TV, then I would strongly urge you to talk your mom into the PS3. How disappointed would they be if they get their new HDTV and only have the PS2 to hook up to it. The PS3 will future-proof them (and provide them a blu-ray player when the happy event arrives).

FWIW, I had my PS3 on a 36" JVC CRT TV. To me, there was no discernible difference between SD DVD and BD when I played them on the PS3 through the JVC.

Glad I now have an HDTV.
