Default PS3 Image Quality

hi,

i just got a ps3 and this is my first experience with blu-ray. when i watch movies on the ps3, the quality of some scenes is not as clear as others. i see what looks like static or a sparkling effect. i've seen it so far in At World's End, Spidey 3, and Talladega Nights. Does anyone know what this is? do i have a defective ps3?

i am hooking it to my tv using HDMI. my tv plays back in 1080p. i have tried several hdmi cables all to the same effect.

i also had trouble getting the ps3 to recognize that my tv plays 1080p. it won't let me set it to 1080i either.

i do not have any of these problems when i play a movie in hd-dvd hooked up the same way to the same tv. any help would be greatly appreciated!

josh
