Default Where the Crawdads Sing - September 13, 2022

Quote:
From the best-selling novel comes a captivating mystery. Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, the verdict as to what actually happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh.

Was pretty tempted when I saw this at Best Buy today with that attractive slipcover, but they're killing me with that price. $27 for one movie is more like 4K pricing. Speaking of which, I really hate hopping on Vudu and seeing this film available digitally in 4K with Dolby Vision, but not on physical.

Since the pandemic shortened theatrical windows, they've gone back to the old model from the 90s and before, charging more for a movie on home video for the first few months. This'll go down in a couple of months.

Based on what I've read, I suspect they analyzed the theatrical audience for the film and decided it was mostly people who wouldn't be buying UHDs. They wouldn't leave money on the table if they thought they could sell enough discs, but UHDs cost more to replicate, so they need to decide which titles to do them for. I'm not making a value judgment about the film, just saying I suspect that was their thinking.

I haven't seen this, but I like the alternate art and think it's superior to the one we and much of the rest of the world got. This seems to be how the Blu-ray was issued in Hong Kong, with its original title:

I found some pictures of the actual HK BD on an auction site:

Sadly, that one appears to be Region AC LOCKED, so if you need a Region B disc, you would have to go with Germany or Italy:

It also seems that the Taiwan release, as well as the upcoming Japanese release, will use this artwork, too:

I like that the Japanese cover is virtually textless except for the title in English and Japanese, however it would have been better to not have the format logos (especially DVD) crowded in on the bottom.
