I'm betting the "psychological horror" aspect is just part of the intended humor of the advertisement video and there is no actual horror elements in this game at all.
For those new to this series, I can imagine some might be confused as to what type of game this really is. |

Oh I'm very well aware what kind of game this is. Despite the cutesy appearance.
![]() I didn't have the ability to play it when it came out, so I watched some of the popular youtubers play through it. But I made reference to it every once and a while. Now I can experience it for myself. And btw, I LOVE The Artwork on that! Just Monika. |

Without major spoilers, the game is pretty much done as a visual novel, however it's very much a deconstruction of the genre. Your choices don't matter much (though can lead to some additional scenes/scares). Know this going in as well that it's a slow burn, just stick with it though and keep playing until you get proper ending credits. That's all I'll say about the game, the rest you should go in as unspoiled as possible.

Yeah it’s like if Charlie Kaufman made a game. It’s very much a genre-bending, game-breaking and very meta ride. He’s not wrong it’s very much irony filled and tongue in cheek, but it’s not being funny about labelling itself as a horror game and then being just a cutesy dating sim, it’s dating sim harbouring a horror game within.
In other words, the warnings and pull quotes are very much on point. |

The trailer is very unusual and reminds me of if a movie preview only showed cheeful, bubbly stuff and then had reviewer quotes saying it was the scariest horror movie they've ever seen. I need to see some of the horror vibe to at least know it's supposed to really be a horror movie, so in that sense, the marketing for that trailer didn't do the game justice IMO, not criticizing the game, just the odd strategy of that trailer. Even the title of the game, one unfamiliar with it would probably never recognize that title as a horror game. "Literature Club Plus". ![]() But I'll definitely take your word for it that it's a horror game/sim. On youtube, watching the horror moments, it looks like glitches with sometimes creepy music but I'm sure it's more impactful for those diving into the story. I see it's a text based game, of which I unfortunately lost my interest in after playing Phantasy Star 2 on the old Genesis back in 1989. That said, the game definitely has an audience. |

Doki Doki has always been marketed with the horror aspect being the hidden element. The original Steam page made absolutely no reference to it being a horror game except for in the tags. It's kind of the gimmick.
And as someone who watches hundreds of horror movies but rarely feels fear - this game did things to me I that I still haven't fully recovered from. And I only watched a long play. It's best experienced going in completely blind. Unless you're easily disturbed. |

That is something how the game affected you as much as it did in terms of Horror. I saw some clips of the horror segments but as you said, I'd probably have to watch it from the start on youtube to see how the characters are affected, rather than just looking at the glitched face effects of the game. |

It's a visual novel, so there isn't really a huge difference between playing it and watching it. There are little puzzles between story segments that determine which characters' route you'd take and there's a few little secret endings and stuff you can unlock with multiple playthroughs. That's about as far as the 'play' factor goes, the rest is about the experience. There is a creative little way to beat the game at the end which the console versions manage to simulate though it feels more legit on PC.
Just know that reading all of the dialog and really getting a feel for the characters helps the whole motion for when the real stuff begins. The slower the better. [Show spoiler]

Good thing I’ll be getting this on the Switch when the physical copy comes out in August. A similar thing happened with the game Death Mark. It was censored on PS4 but not on the Switch (which is the version I got after finding out).
