I still can't believe after all these years that Dances with wolves won best picture and Best director went to Kevin Costner. What about Goodfellas? A movie that has definately stood the test of time. The acedemy has been full of shit on more then a few occasions but, that one is the pinnacle of there celebrity favoritism. A Beautiful Mind also comes to mind.

By The Dark Knight I assume you mean Let The Right One In? Because that was definitely 2008's best picture.

As this is an opinion forum, I too will express mine:

I strongly disagree with you kind sir, however I will agree that Goodfellas is an extraordinarily good film. I will add that I believe The Departed to be a much stronger film, therefore I am glad that it is the first win for Martin Scorsese. I have never had less respect in the Academy than when they picked Shakespear in Love for the Best Picture win over the most deserving film of all time, Saving Private Ryan. That was a travesty!

BTW Dances With Wolves is one of my favorite movies, and I also am a big fan of A Beautiful Mind but was disappointed when it won over The Fellowship of the Ring.

Though not an American release, the Olivier Hamlet is going to be available in the UK in October, I believe.

Slumdog was a good movie, but the win should have gone to The Benjamin Case of Curious Button. There is also no director more worthy of an award than David Fincher. It was disappointing that TDK was not nominated for BP, if it was then I would say that was the more deserving pic.

I think that we're a long way away from recognizing independent films in the Academy Awards shamefully enough. I dream of the day that the Academy finds that just because a movie costs over $25 million to make doesn't mean that it is superior in a way that it should receive more recognition over an independently funded and well made film. Until a halfway decent indy film is recognized among the other Hollywood big-budget sh!t that makes its way into the noms, the Academy of Sciences and Arts should be ashamed of itself. I actually think that the "Academy" is stepping further and further back from this each year.

I thought that the Dark Knight was the best film of 08' but can you imagine the academy giving the oscar to a movie based on comic books/graphic novels, can't really see that happening.

I want to see the Deer Hunter on region 1 soon.

Slumdog Millionaire was made for less than $14 million, and it won Best Picture.

Just sayin'...

Universal did release The Sting and The Deer Hunter on HD-DVD, but has yet to port them over to Blu-ray.
