Yes!!!!!!!!
One of my favorite forgotten masterpieces! I was thinking just last week that it would make a perfect Twilight Time title, with its gorgeous, spare Delerue score. Cannot wait for this on BD.

It's astonishing that Vanessa Redgrave plays the title role and is the dominant character in the film, yet only appears in one 10 minute scene, for which she won a well-deserved Oscar.

I was holding out hope that it would find its way to the Criterion Collection, and get some documentaries and retrospective interviews, but I'll be happy just to have the film in HD.

And you'll be happy to know a brand new 4K transfer is currently in progress!

Another great announcement; hope that the concurrent Fox year end hit of '77, The Turning Point, finds a new master and release soon as well.

Amazing news!!!! The film is gorgeous, and many scenes are in very low light, which doesn't seem to have come through all that great on the old DVD transfer. I was afraid that would make its way to BD. So excited to know it's a new transfer!!!

Will there be any extras? I know both Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave were very passionate about the film, I'm sure they'd be willing to talk about it.

I was lucky enough to go to a screening with a Q&A with writer Alvin Sargent and editor Walter Murch at the Getty a few years ago. Murch had lots of great stories to tell of working with Zinnemann.

This will feature an all-new commentary with Jane Fonda.

Press Release 04/01/2016

Fred Zinnemann directs the unforgettably moving film of Lillian Hellman’s book, a winner of 3 Academy Awards® in a dazzling 4K restoration on Blu-ray, with an all-new Jane Fonda commentary!

“JULIA”
Limited Edition BLU-RAY Release
Only 3,000 units available at
http://www.twilighttimemovies.com

Once they are gone – they are gone!
RELEASE DATE: TUESDAY, APRIL 12TH, 2016

“Fred Zinnemann’s superbly sensitive film…is handsome and tasteful. The period environment, brilliantly recreated…complements the topflight performances and direction. Fonda and Redgrave…are dynamite together on the screen.” —Variety

“Miss Fonda and Miss Redgrave are marvelous and true…In their comparatively few scenes together, the movie builds emotional momentum…moves back and forth in time and place as we do in good conversation.” —Vincent Canby, The New York Times

Adapted by Alvin Sargent from a chapter in Lillian Hellman’s memoir, Pentimento, and directed by the magisterial Fred Zinnemann, Julia (1977) stars Jane Fonda as the famously flinty Hellmann and Vanessa Redgrave as her childhood friend, a young woman from a wealthy upper-crust American family who becomes a ferocious anti-Fascist in Europe during the prelude to World War II. Also starring Jason Robards as Hellman’s tough lover, the writer Dashiell Hammett, and Maximilian Schell as a deceptively mild-mannered resistance member. Shot by Douglas Slocombe, and highlighted by music from the sublime Georges Delerue.

I watched it on Thursday, it looks gorgeous, best this film has ever looked by far.

I would say it looks like it was shot yesterday, only I'd have to qualify that by saying it looks like it was shot yesterday on gorgeous 1970s film stocks, and lit in a way that nobody knows how to light anymore.

I think the movie is flawed, but really enjoyed the way they filmed Europe it in. Looks very natural and authentic. Colors are just right. Good restoration job.

She was on the screen more than that great 10 min scene. I also think this is Jane Fonda's best performance as well.

True,
[Show spoiler]she is in a few flashbacks, and has a couple of lines in each of them, the longest one is probably the Oxford flashback, but she isn't really in any proper scenes except for the big one in Berlin towards the end.
And I agree, Fonda has never been better, great as she has been elsewhere. As she explains on the commentary, the relationship of their characters mirrored her own relationship with/admiration for Redgrave, so she's acting feelings that were very true for her throughout.

I would award Fonda her second Oscar for Julia, or tie with Keaton (who also has looking for Mr Goodbar that year). That would leave room for the AMPAS to reward the great Bergman her last Oscar for a great performance in Autumn Sonata. Fonda in coming home has no business beating Bergman for that performance.

I just watched Julia twice in blu Ray last week. This is a good upgrade over the SD DVD. What a passionate pair of great performances by the two leading ladies. Jason Robards actually is better than I remembered. The director, script, score and cinematography are all first rate. Maybe the Hellman issue backfired? I cannot believe that no one talked about this film any more.

Pay close attention to her hospital scene. That one closeup tells so much about the feelings and relationship between Julia and Lillian.

I recently picked up a new copy of this TT disc for an excellent price. I had never heard of this movie and was unaware of its history. Looking forward to watching it.

Great film. I saw it when it was first released and loved it and on rewatches over the years the film hasn't dated one bit.
