I would say it effects us a simply a nother manufacturer ignoring the existense of HDDVD, which is great.

This would be outstanding if true I think. Sonic is pretty much one of the top names behind burning software on computers. The more the name Blu-ray becomes synonymous with everything having to do with hi-def video, the better

Sonic's Scenarist is one of the main standards in the industry. Every post-house that does work for the studios uses their program, not exclusively, but...

This basically means there's not enough interest in HD DVD to continue any R&D to improve their Scenarist HD Authoring programs.

If true... Game over for HD DVD.

The scenarist suite is the #1 professional tool for Authoring development, nothing less

When people see Sonic, they might think of DVDit, the consumer level product. They actually have a whole range of products, from consumer level to the industry standard (Scenarist).
In fact, Scenarist is above DVD Studio pro for all intent and purposes, at least in the pro world. This is big news indeed, as Sonic is to DVD/ HD authoring what Adobe is to Image/publishing.

I guess it's up to Microsoft to help out the studios and Toshiba to get their encodings up to snuff.

Sonic offer both authoring and encoding solutions. The fact that they are going to kill the HD DVD authoring side is more important than the encoding scheme. Most studios use multiple encoding solutions.

This probably leave it up to Toshiba for disc authoring, I not sure who provides HD DVD authoring schemes that are as widely used in the industry as Sonic.

Yes, this thread should really be named "authoring" not "encoding".

It is a blow to HD-DUD but you still can use Scenarist to author DUD but any enhancements/support will not happen. Like when M$ stopped supporting Win95, you can still use it but if you have a issue/bug tough cookies...

Thumbs up

THE most important part is this:

Quote:
Additionally, Sonic will offer customers who purchased their Scenarist HD DVD authoring applications a special promotion to exchange their current software for the Blu-ray system.
Tons will now be switching their software from DUD to BLU

If a Red Domino falls in the forest but no one is there to hear it... does it make a noise?

I don't think Sonic really had a choice given the complete lack of HD burners and media.

No point in encoding something you can't distribute...

Kinda true, however, this is about professional authoring support. Like What the studios use to make the discs, more then what the consumers use.

I use Adobe Encore, and all the new Adobe line only supports Blu too.

I heard somewhere that HD-DVD does sell more disk drives in computers than Blu-ray though.

I guess this begs to differ.
