This will push Jennifer Lawrence into double digits when it comes to movies available on 4K disc.

[Show spoiler] - and not 16mm, so you'd be surprised just what modern 16mm stock can do with a modern digital finish. Now I ain't saying it'll give you the fourest of kays but there's at least 2K worth of detail there that'll have all the room in the world to breathe when finished in 4K, and the grain itself will be resolved as finely as possible, not just from the oversampled finish but the HEVC encode for UHD. I won't be seeing this film in das kino but I'll there on UHD, yessir. |

I hope to see this in theaters but if not, I'll check out the UHD. I don't expect a 4K finish but even with 2K I'm sure it'll look great encoded properly, like you say (if Paramount couldn't bother giving TF a 4K finish than I doubt they'll indulge this one). I'm supposed to work on a 16mm project in about a month (provided it doesn't get delayed again...), so I'm more curious about the format than I normally would be. Are there any movies with 16mm footage on UHD yet?

The original Texas chainsaw, as mentioned above, but it's a German import if that matters any. There's also some 16mm in the 4K-finished Argo, but IIRC it's for some of the more hectic crowd scenes so it's not really the best judge of it.
As for the 4K finish itself, why not? For something like Transformers the prevalence of 2K VFX and also the parallel 3D 2K finish is what works against it despite the mega budget, the studios figure it'd be quicker, easier and cheaper to cap it all at 2K and be done with it (see also: Guardians Vol. 2). But here you haven't got a vast swathe of expensive VFX and/or 3D shenanigans, just a single workflow and if you can budget for it (bearing in mind they could work with 2K proxies to keep the bandwidth overheads down) then it's well worth doing. DP Matty Libatique is a big proponent of 4K, even at just the oversampling level for 2K, so he'd also leap at the chance for a proper 4K finish. |

True, good points. Didn't know about Libatique's preference, hopefully he pushes for it and gets his way. I knew Argo had some 16mm (I think Song to Song might, too), but it's mainly in archival footage or that crowd stuff towards the beginning which, as you say, ain't great to begin with. Re: Transformers, we've seen VFX-heavy shows from Fox get 4K masters despite being released in 3D, so I figured Paramount would wanna do the same for what's essentially their flagship franchise (or "was," lol), but I guess not. I'm sure it'll look great regardless.

Martian's a different story though, that got rebuilt in 4K after the theatrical release which was done at 2192x1156 res. And it appears to be the exception that proves the rule about no-one touching after-market 4K rebuilds with a bargepole, as nothing like that has happened since AFAIK.
