Notes

1. Thanks to highdefdigest forum member CochiseGuy for first finding and posting this article.

2. The figures for the first three quarters came from Home Media Research (Q1, Q2, Q3). The figures for the fourth quarter come from the Redhill Group. Note that Judith McCourt, formerly Director Sales and Marketing for Home Media Research, now works at the Redhill Group, so it is very likely that she took her spreadsheets along with her.

3. Figures from the Redhill Group. These figures are higher than the Nielsen VideoScan figures leaked, and like the Home Media Research figures in the past, in all likelihood include sales outside Nielsen coverage.

4. These figures have been calculated from the aggregate sales figures listed above, and disaggregated using Nielsen VideoScan ratios.

Pretty said only $300 million in HD sales for both all year.

And Blu Ray only outselled them LESS then the 2:1 ratio thats always been reported..

Time for BR Studio's to step-up and pump some more awesome titles out.

Nevermind the ratios. Look at the actual numbers.

The ratio stayed almost static between Q3 and Q4 BUT Blu-ray increased their sales by 2.1M discs in Q4 where as HD DVD only managed an extra 1.2M.

So Blu-ray increased their sales by almost a million discs over and above HD DVD in Q4. Those are the numbers that do the speaking if you are a studio, not the sales ratios.

Good sign that the sales ratio was better in Q4 than Q3.

The Paramount impact was pretty much non-existant.

the ratio's were a HD-DVD fanboy argument..

they would say we didn't increase our lead....but when you look at discs sold...they got lambasted..

thank god that's all over...

Actually it probably had a 2% difference in YTD and SI. Assuming a 60/40 split for TF that would have sold about 360k and I think its safe to say the other Paramount titles like Shrek 3 and Blades of Glory and Top Gun would have sold at least 40k combined, so Paramounts decision cost BD at least 400k in disc sales possibly up to 500k disc sales.

If 400k discs
YTD: 65.6:34.4 ---- SI: 63.7:36.3

If 500k discs
YTD: 66:34 ------- SI: 64.1:35.9

There's no question Blu Ray would have done better with Paramount on board. However, Blu Ray still managed to increase market share from Q3 to Q4.

Transformers likely swayed a lot of player purchases, so had a much bigger effect than just its own sales. Paramount made their switch at a time when even common titles were selling at about 2:1 for Blu-ray (and I don't just mean the kind of titles that really target PS3 owners). If that switch hadn't happened and Toshiba didn't get anything else big like that to move in their favor, Q4 could have been quite a wipeout. As it ended up, Sony may have had to work a lot harder to sign Warner, but in the end the result will likely mostly be the same (all studios releasing on Blu-ray).

3.2 Million HD DVD discs sold.

At $30 retail, 96 million dollars.

Paramount payout.

$150 million.

Getting your ass handed to you by a rival who didn't have to bribe studios for support?

Priceless.

Didn't Pirates 3 come out in December? For having done so and to have sold 219,000 copies in a month. That, my friends, is incredible! If it had been out the same time that Transformers came out then Pirates would've ended up with more sales Don't ya think?

Bear in mind that if you just count Transformers, that would be most likely some 500,000 copies on Blu-ray had they stayed neutral, so the Paramount effect just kept the numbers stable instead of being totally lopsided.

If you want to see lopsided sales, wait until the first couple of weeks of 2008 Nielsen data starts rolling in. That's going to be some very fun reading coming soon.

Despite the downturn in DVD sales, the $23.7 billion total spending on home video dwarfs Hollywood's $9.6 billion box-office total for 2007.
To emphasize exactly what is as stake as people start holding off purchases waiting to go high-def, but not doing so because of the war.
