Disney Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 4K UHD (2017)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 4K Blu-ray

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 4K Blu-ray

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 4K + 3D Blu-ray

In the video below, director James Gunn mentions he is talking with Disney to get Guardians of the Galaxy 2 released, when it first becomes available via Blu-Ray, also in 4k.

"I am really working hard to get the 4K HDR version out on home video when the movie is released on that format. I'm trying to get Disney to do it right off the bat, so we'll see if I am successful or not," Gunns says.

James Gunn also confirms scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 were shot both in 2K and 4K, and that the movie switches between them.

As weird as it is, him pushing for it might make it happen. Directors have been influential on such things before.

That's great to know James Gunn is thinking about home video format this early.

Help us James Gunn, you're our only hope!

Oh, and Dolby Vision please.

Well, that's encouraging. If Disney really does plan to get into 4K by the end of the year, it's hard to imagine a better title to launch with.

What exactly is Disney waiting for? The format is over a year old. By the time Guardians 2 hits home video, we'll be a year and a half into UHD.

Im not going to get my hopes up. The Mouse probably already has a plan for when and how they want to enter the UHD market and a director like James Gunn is unlikely to have any say in that plan.

I dunno; he managed to turn a little-known comic into one of the most unexpected successes in the history of comic book films, and its sequel is probably Disney's most anticipated film of the year other than The Last Jedi.

He may not be successful, but I wouldn't underestimate his influence. Based on the trailers, GotG2 would be absolutely marvelous in HDR on UHD; maybe one of the very best transfers to date. By the time it comes out on home formats Dolby Vision discs will be a thing as well, so it could benefit from that.

Supposedly they're waiting for Dolby Vision.

Might as well wait until next year for a 4K release, when ST 2094-40 gets added to the UHD specs, so they can release it in HDR10+.

for every format: DVD, bluray - Disney's wait is usually at least a year --- time will tell if it's the same for UHD

I remember when Mary Poppins was one of the first of their DVDs. I know the Blu-Ray of the film was released way after Blu-Ray got started but that's because it needed to be restored. I'm hoping for an UHD of Mary Poppins for next year to coincide with their (unnecessary) sequel. I'll be pissed if they just rerelease the Blu.

I figure Disney will start releasing their live action films in 2018. I dont expect any UHD releases of disney's animated classics until 2019 or 2020.

I was the one who spoke to James Gunn yesterday, and I very much got the impression that while not a done deal, it was very much under discussion.

Directors are very adapt at avoiding topics they don't want to talk about with a 'well we'll have to see' type answer. The fact that he was willing to talk publicly about his hope that Disney will do a 4k release is very good news.

And he confirmed that they hold the assets for and want to do it in Dolby Vision/HDR.

Just as importantly he said they're looking to do it in the first release pattern, rather than making people double dip in, say, a year's time.

So, very hopeful!

Now, when he says 4K, does he mean UHD or 4k Vudu?

Well considering that he has been gushing over the 4k HDr release in Dolby Cinema's I kinda saw this coming. I guess he has been working directly on the HDR 4k copies for theater and says it is the definitive way to watch the movie! I know I will be making the trek to one of the only Dolby Cinema's in the area.

unfortunately the 3D trailers are quite amazing, which would negate the encoding of those DCP's to 2K only.

Correct me if I am wrong but this below reads like some scenes were shot in 4k and other scenes were shot in 2k so that means the 4k will be a mix of upscaling and native 4k shots.

"James Gunn also confirms scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 were shot both in 2K and 4K"

My question is then if he wants a 4K HDR release why did he not shoot totally in 4K and have no upscaling.

4K Dolby Vision UHD blu-ray Please for Guardians 2 would be nice.
