Default Onkyo 705 vs Onkyo 605

I would like some feedback from some owners out there.
I know the 705 has THX and extra HDMI. I think it has 10 more watts per channel as well.

Is THX going to do anything to make a difference?

Tell me some pros and cons from personal experience:
Thanks!!

It.s gonna depend on many variables..

Your ears.
your speakers.
your taste

I love my 705 into polks
I will probably get a 905 to drive my M&K's
and my ears are long gone, but I love friends reactions

i also heard it takes everything from 5.1 to 7.1 right? Does the THX help with any sound? What type of Polks are you using?

It is a "fake" 5.1 to 7.1. If the movie does not support 7.1 it just replicates the sound of your 2 front speakers to the back 2 it that makes sense to you. From what I have heard is THX is not as big of an impact as it used to be.....Just what I have gathered from forums on here.

I don't think the difference in price is worth it, IMO. I'm going to buy the 605 soon.

I am also! YEAHH with the 5.1 Polk speakers. Im not a big audio expert but do I only need 2 HDMI inputs on my TV to hook up the PS3 and 605 to work properly? For instance does the hook up go like this....HDMI from PS3 to TV and then HDMI from 605 to TV?

You want to the HDMI to go from your PS3 to the the reciever and then from the reciever to the TV. HDMI handles both Picture and Sound.

I went with the 705 over the 605 because my cable box does hdmi as well as the PS3 so I wanted to have one extra slot in case I ever get a stand alone Blu-Ray player or anything else that needed HDMI in the future

Actually, I owned the 605 and traded it in for a 705.
Couple reasons:
1) The 705 has one additional HMI port over the 605.
2) The 605 has a very common problem specific to the 605 model in which you will randomly get "popping" sounds on a random speaker at a random volume.
If you get a 605, you may or may not have this problem, but it is very common and something to be aware of before purchasing.

My only complaint with either model is that it only upconverts component inputs for 720 hdmi out. this means you will only have 720 if using your hdmi out even if the incoming component signal is 1080. I have three devices in ym theater, my blu-ray, my appletv, and my cable box. all of which are high def, this means at least one of them would have been downgraded to 720 because there are only 2 hdmi inputs. With the 705 I can use hdmi for all the connections. and keep my 1080 picture quality for all my components.

Thanks for the advice. I have a HD Cable box also. I really couldnt tell a differece when I switched between HDMI or component. But maybe I was not watching for the right thing...

If I am only using a PS3 in the equation I would still have my full 1080P with my 605 correct?

I got my 605 for $389 total from Tigerdirect. For me, I didn't need the extra HDMI port, 10W, or learning remote that came with the 705 for the extra $$$.

I only have a 5.1 set up, so I didn't need the 7.1 either.

I've only had my 605 for a few weeks. So far, no problem with popping sounds, but unfortunately, the down button on the remote has failed.

I connect my PS3 via HDMI to the 605 as well as the TWC cable HD-DVR. I have one HDMI cable going to my TV.

Correct. Either HDMI inputs will handle the 1080p.

Yes, both the 605 and 705 will accept and process a 7.1 signal. The difference being discussed is the receiver's ability to take a 5.1 audio input, and extend it to 7.1 so that all of the speakers are used. This is where there are some differences.

What I see with my 605 is that it will take bitstreamed Dolby Digital 5.1 and extend it to 7.1 using the Dolby EX setting. It will also take bitstreamed DTS core and extend it to 7.1. However, it will NOT take a 5.1 LPCM signal and extend it to 7.1, which the 705 will do.

My player (PS3) does not have the ability to bitstream DTS HD MA, or Dolby TrueHD. I'd be curious to know if the 605 will extend a 5.1 TrueHD or DTS MA if it is received via bitstream. Has anyone on this board bitstreamed these to the 605 and can answer this? If it will, I may consider picking up the BD50 player.

The PS3 adding the ability to decode DTS HD MA will not help me, as it will be passed as LPCM, which my 605 will not extend to 7.1.

Any validity to the complaints on the 705 about audio sync problems?

I really need to study audio some more! lol I am confused somewhat. All I need to know is...will my PS3 make any movie that I will buy sound good in either 5.1 or 7.1?
