Default Underrated/ Unsung Action Movies

Let's give a shout out for some action movies that don't get their due or have been forgotten in the annals of movie history. I'll start with Terminal Velocity (1994) starring Charlie Sheen, written by David Twohy. The script is great and very funny, loads of quotable lines. The action is exciting and well done, the story has lots of twists and turns in it. It's a really good 90's action movie that i would recommend to any fans of action. It certainly doesn't get enough credit for its funny script and dialogue.

The Tournament (2009) has a lot of fantastic action, especially the scenes involving Sebastien Foucan (better known for the free-running scene in Casino Royale). But I've barely heard it mentioned and seen a few bad reviews.

This was a good movie, very underrated. There's a great scene with Scott Adkins. The finale on the motorway with the bus is great too.

I rewatched this the other weekend, I've always loved it. Davis' performance is a bit ropey at times, especially when playing the tougher side of her character but as usual Renny Harlin handles the action with aplomb.

Mark Dacascos is the most underrated action star ever (now that Dolph finally got his due in recent years thanks to The Expendables franchise) , so here's three of his best:

I remember enjoying The Tournament as well.

Some faves of mind would include:
  • Air Force One: Action fans should know of it, but after all these years I think it's been left in the dust, and I rarely see it mentioned much anymore.
  • Invisible Target: It's just flat-out awesome. I remember this one being loaded with lots of good fights and explosions and everything. Jackie Chan's son stars (I don't even know what else he's starred in since ).
  • Crying Freeman: Yeah, the acting and writing kinda suck, but the visual prowess if phenomenal. The movie looks just like a live-action anime. It has plenty of heart to it. As I recall, I don't think this one was made readily-available to buy in the US, so that's probably why it remains somewhat obscure.
  • Golgo 13: The Kowloon Assignment: Because Sonny Chiba is pretty darn cool, and the movie has its fair share of thrills. With the film's style and grit, it reminded me a bit of Dirty Harry, only the guy's an assassin rather than a cop.
  • The Executioner: Same as above, also with Sonny Chiba, but with more karate!
  • Sucker Punch: I know the story's pretty hard to get on the surface level, but I think it gets way more hate than it deserves.

One more before I forget. Michael Jai White (another underused action star) just KILLS it in this one. The final showdown at the end is epic.

I think Renny Harlin has a way with action films.... it's all personal preference of course but something about his direction really connects with me as far as action sequences...

3 of my all time favorite action films are CLIFFHANGER, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, and DIE HARD 2 (yes, the hated sequel here but I just love it!!)

Unleashed with Jet Li was one of the strangest action films I've ever seen, but that's what I liked about it. The only martial arts film to take place in Glasgow, Scotland and to co-star Morgan Freeman it's about a martial arts savant raised from birth like a dog by a gangster to function as a living weapon.

I also really liked Haywire by Stephen Soderbergh.

Stone Cold starring Brian Bosworth.
It has a very low IQ but has alot of action scenes and macho one liners.

Worth it for the pet komodo alone. And when they light Forsythe on fire as a tribute. And naturally....the mullet.

Love that flick.

Very well said mate and I completely agree with you 100%

He needs a decent big budget movie with a good script to get him back on the map. I haven't seen Legend of Hercules yet but visually it looks fantastic.

Is The Hard Way the movie where Michael J Fox is handcuffed to a bed in an apartment? The reason I ask is because I remember this scene from when I was young but couldn't remember the movie, and thought it was actually The Rookie with Eastwood and Sheen, but when I picked up The Rookie Blu Ray, I found out of course it wasn't that movie.

While I'm talking about it, The Rookie is a lot of fun!

Blood and Bone is great with a hilarious performance by the main villain.
