CW Plotting 'Arrow' Spinoff 'Atom'

Superhero series would be based on Brandon Routh's character

The CW could soon be adding a second spinoff from Arrow.

CW Renews 'Arrow,' 'Flash,' 'Supernatural,' 'Vampire Diaries,' 'Originals,' More
During his time at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour, CW president Mark Pedowitz said the network is already in discussions about expanding the Arrow and Flash universe. While he declined to provide any additional details on just what that would look like, Arrow executive producer Greg Berlanti helped clarify when asked directly if the potential addition could be based on Arrow recurring player Brandon Routh's DC character Atom/aka Ray Palmer.

In the DC Comics, The Atom can shrink down to a subatomic size, with Arrow marking one of the only times the character has appeared in a live-action series.

"We're in very early talks in a very general idea that we haven't gone deeper on yet," Berlanti told reporters, with Routh noting he would like to continue with the role.

"When [the Arrow role] was proposed, I was hesitant to step into DC world again,” Routh said. The actor first donned Superman's cape in 2006's Superman Returns.

Pedowitz, whose schedule is lined with three DC shows in Arrow spinoff Flash and an adaptation of iZombie, noted that there's "room for a lot of things" on his schedule and that genre is clearly working for the network. (Freshman The Flash, already renewed for a second season, ranks as The CW's most-watched series.)

Added Berlanti about the network's expanding universe: "We just love this universe and we want to keep growing it," he told THR. "We are trying to do more of what we enjoy, and it's true: the shows are so plentiful with characters and storylines. There's a region of the universe that we felt like we haven't dealt with yet that we'd like to deal with."

Don't know how good it could/would be, but I'd give it a shot. Routh is fun to watch in the role.

Yeah, I'm still skeptical about "Ant-Man", and seeing a tiny hero every week in the same universe as "Arrow" and "The Flash" concerns me, too.

An Atom spinoff would be difficult to get off the ground for Fall. They would need to write a backdoor Pilot within Arrow to help set it up. We don't know how much more Brandon Routh will be involved with this season of Arrow.

If The CW/WB and the Producers agree to a deal, I could see this being a midseason show for 2016. My only concern would be over-working the Arrow/The Flash creative team.

Apparently if you date Felicity, you end up with your own series.

I don't mind an Atom series but was hoping for something along the lines of Blue & Gold- Blue Beetle and Booster Gold.

I don't know if Atom could maintain a regular series for long. The comics character has not been able to maintain a regular series for very long, and a TV show needs a lot more viewers than a comic book needs readers to sustain itself.

I like Routh... and so far his character is fine... but I would rather just have him stick around and perhaps bounce back and forth between both shows as a recurring regular guest than to get his own show.

I wouldn't mind seeing DC put out some limited mini-series for characters that wouldn't be expected to carry a regular full series.

I think they could pull it off, Routh has alot of charm and with a decent jump off from Arrow and some good writing it could work.
I think with some of the smaller characters are prime real estate for things like this. Less established and known gives more freedom to writers and less for hard core readers to be mad about not meeting expectations.

As long as they're good shows, I'm all for it. Arrow, Flash, and Gotham are all great.

Superheros fall under the genre of sci-fi. It really is an untapped market if you think about it. With every new generation you will have fans and those who are not.

It may seem like there is a lot of activity going on but if you think about there is so much material out there they are barely scratching the surface.

I agree. So far everything that was introduced has been good. I even enjoyed the Birds of Prey series. If they developed it further it coudl have easily gotten a second season!!

Gotham (the Agents of SHIELD of DC), we can do without, but Arrow and Flash are getting the "solo movie" urge out of Warner's system, if they want the Justice League Initiative to compete with Marvel's Phase 3.
Atom seems more like the "Arrow Network" theory than the "If they liked Flash, they'll like obscure characters" Ant-Man competition, so it's a good way of getting Warner over their traumatized fear of any minor DC character that ever appeared on the Superfriends.
And before somebody inevitably makes the same stale Wonder Twins joke again, y'know, that Smallville episode wasn't too bad, by CW standards.

(Besides, it's CW...What, you want more teen vampires and witch cliques again?)

Arrow/Flash Superhero Team-Up Spinoff In Works At CW; Brandon Routh, Victor Garber, Wentworth Miller, Caity Lotz Star

EXCLUSIVE: DC Comics superheroes are uniting in a potential new drama series at the CW, spinoff from hits Arrow and The Flash that will feature several fan-favorite recurring actors/characters from both shows. I have learned that the network has teamed with Arrow creators Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim for a project eyed for next season toplined by Brandon Routh, Victor Garber, Wentworth Miller and Caity Lotz.

The untitled project, now in development, is described as a superhero team-up show. Routh, Miller and Garber will reprise their popular DC Comics characters — Arrow‘s Ray Palmer/The Atom (Routh), Flash villain Leonard Snart/Captain Cold (Miller), and Flash‘s Dr. Martin Stein (Garber). Because her Arrow character Sara Lance was killed off, with her sister Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) taking over as the Black Canary, it is unclear whether Lotz will play the same or new superhero.

The project is in early stages of development, so there is a possibility for other Arrow/Flash characters to cross over to the new spinoff. Additionally, in a tidbit that should get fans fired up, I have learned the new project will include three major DC Comics characters who have never

This is the project CW president Mark Pedowitz vaguely referenced at TCA in January. It will not be part of the current pilot cycle. With the creative auspices and talent involved, I hear that it could go straight to series, possibly for next midseason.

Berlanti and Kreisberg, who also co-created The Flash, and Guggenheim executive produce with Sarah Schechter for Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Prods.

Teaming up superheroes has been a winning formula, as proven by the success of the Justice League and The Avengers comics. Marvel’s The Avengers have crossed over to features, with DC’s Justice League also on its way to the big screen. Routh is repped by UTA and Main Title, Lotz is repped by UTA and Atlas Artists.

Not sure what the plan is with Caity Lotz unless they bring Sara back to life. They can't have her play a new character since this show and Arrow would definitely have crossover episodes and that would just be weird.

I like Caity Lotz, but having her in this seems kind of silly. Bringing Sara back to life would be pretty stupid, especially since Laurel is now Black Canary, so there's no place for her in this.

Otherwise, this sounds pretty interesting.

Actually... they can... and here's how...

Remember back when Mom Lance first appeared? She thought Sara was still alive and even had a photo of a girl that looked like her... but they tracked her down and found it wasn't her daughter after all. Of course we found out later Sara really was still alive...

BUT...

They have essentially already established there is a girl in the world that looks enough like Sara that her mom thought it was her. Give that character a backstory, and boom Caity Lotz is back and Sara is still dead.

Dominic Purcell Bringing Heat Wave to The Flash/Arrow Spinoff Series

Dominic Purcell is joining his fellow Prison Break-alum Wentworth Miller in The CW’s upcoming The Flash/Arrow spinoff. Purcell will reprise his role as Heat Wave/Mick Rory, a villainous pyromaniac who teamed up with Miller’s Captain Cold/Leonard Snart to antagonize The Flash earlier this season. The currently untitled superhero team-up series is in the early development stages at The CW for a possible launch next year.

The series is also set to star Brandon Routh as The Atom/Ray Palmer, Victor Garber as Dr. Martin Stein, aka one-half of Firestorm, and Caity Lotz who’s role is yet to be confirmed. Lotz’s Black Canary/Sarah Lance was assassinated at the beginning of Arrow‘s third season, but as The Flash/Arrow executive producer Greg Berlanti told me earlier this year at the TCA Press Tour, resurrections are always possible on a comic book series. Berlanti joins fellow Arrow creators Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg, along with Sarah Schechter, as executive producers of the new series.

The show will also feature three more major DC characters that have yet to appear on either The Flash or Arrow. And given the success of the previous Arrow/The Flash crossover episodes, I’d count on seeing a few more fan favorite characters pop up – especially since so many of the characters share intimate relationships with key players on the other two shows. Perhaps the most interesting of these – how is it that only one-half of Firestorm is currently set to appear? Of course, there’s still plenty of time for Robbie Amell to sign on as Dr. Stein’s other half, Ronnie Raymond.

What do you think? Are you excited to see Purcell and Miller co-starring in another series? Which DC characters are you hoping to see? Let us know in the comments.
