Its actually out in the US next week on DVD from Breaking Glass but alas no Blu Ray release, not even in its naive Denmark. Its powerful stuff and completely uncompromising stuff. Trine Dyrholm (and Antonio Banderas in Pain & Glory) give to two great performances of the year. Just shattering stuff this film.

Just watched A Special Friendship on youtube. Really enjoyed that one. It had me thinking for days after. I do see CVMC has it on their site. Maybe if they have some type of Black Friday sale I'll get a copy? Never dealt with them before. Lolita is one I always really liked. Funny thing is I've not seen the original~just read the book and watched the film from 97.

CVMC is very quick to ship (or at least in my experience), quality is best of what's availible, and the subtitles have always been great (unlike some places that use google translate subs that make no sense). Plus every two weeks they have a significant sale listed on the front page! In fact, currently they have a couple from my "Top 50" coming of age list and some other good ones on sale.

The '97 Lolita was the good one. Although Sellers was good as Quilty, I think Langella bested the role as did Swain over Lyons. Shelly Winters though was way better a "old cow" than Griffith. But the older movie itself suffered from censorship to the point Stanly Kubrick hated it. He said had he known how difficult it would be to make it through the censors and still have a movie left, he would have never takin it on.


And yes Special Friendship was excellent. Definitely a classic!

Lol, same age here, and Swain was definitely in my dreams . Although the article collecting for me was Drew Barrymore (I remember having the article of her at 13 in a party dress as the headline sent her to rehab ) and Christina Applegete (my mom threw that folder of clippings away

Too bad Swain never really "made it" big, I mean she regularly acts so she made it as an actress.. But her movie "Happy Campers" is one of my favorite comedies. She's a camp counselor at a summer camp.

I loved this movie. It's a shame it's almost invisible... I tried to wrote to CNC, Criterion, etc... on Twitter for a restoration (in 2024 it will be its 60th anniversary) and a new distributed Blu Ray, but... no answers...

Right! There are alot that it is ashame have not even got a dvd. Write to Altered Innocence. New label that does both LGBTQ and Coming of age movies. I talked to him the other day and he seemed like a very nice dude and said he could confirm that "one" of the titles on my COA list was being worked on! Let him know your interested in this one! Cant hurt

Edited* My guess for AI is Take Me to the River. Just seems like a film they might put out to me. It does have a DVD available, but not blu. I do wish they went in for older titles like This Special Friendship. Maybe I'll suggest that one to them as well. Should be interesting to see what it is though!

Reading about some of these films reminds me of YOUNG APHRODITES (1963), which I think was a Greek coming-of-age film from long ago. I don't think I ever saw it, being only 10 years old when it played a local art theater.

I watched The Lover today and I have to say, it was really good! Really liked seeing the locations they used. Obviously, the story is the most interesting part here though. It felt real to me. Didn't hold back. The families, the way they acted towards the man. The people in town. I found the writer of the original story to be an interesting person. Marguerite Duras and the man in the story was Huynh Thuy Le. Both can be seen here:
