Connecting PS3 to wireless internet

I'm having troubles determining my ASCII and WEP Keys for my wireless internet at home so I can set up the internet on my PS3. Can I connect with a CAT5 and detect the settings that way, or is there a way I can look this information up on my laptop????? I can't figure it out!!!!!!

Could you be a bit more specific?

Are you saying you don't know your WEP password? Do you have it in hexadecimal format? There's tons of free translators online... just Google "ASCII to hex converter".

If your router supports it, I'd switch over to WPA2.

To answer your question, no, you cannot hook up the PS3 to the router via CAT5 and expect it to automagically detect the wireless/WEP settings.

Give me a bit more info to go on and I might be able to solve your problem here.

Actually I would just eliminate your wireless security for 5 minutes to then have it detect and add it to your router. Once it does just turn the security back on. thats what I did and it took 3 minutes...wala done.

if you havent ever messed with your wireless stuff on your laptop you probably dont have the security thing turned on so you shouldnt need to put anything on those on your ps3...but to access this you type like 192.168.1.1 in your url address thing and it should have a username and password window popup ..type admin for the name and leave password blank or the other way around if that doesnt work and it should go to the options

when your laptop finds a wireless network what name does it say like linksys or something? i would just type that in the first option on the wireless settings on ps3 and leave everything else blank and disabled

Do you know if it is WEP? If so, 64bit 128bit or 256bit? If you want the WEP key, you can find it on your router. Use your browser to go to the gateway address and your router will have a wireless set-up section that'll show the WEP key in it. If it is 128bit, the WEP key will be 26 Hex characters in length. 64bit would be 10 hex characters in length.

Thanks for all the help.... here's what's going on..... According to everything I could find, My ASCII is my set up as my last name

My WEP is 64 bit encryption, and the WEP password is the 10-digit number below the serial number on the bottom of my 2Wire router (My wife won't let me replace this!!!!!!! Stupid SBC!) When I scan, or remove all security, it doesn't connect..... I have 95-100% signal strength.... it found the I.P. address one time for the PS3, and failed to connect, anything I can do further?????????

P.S. does the 10 digit all numerical WEP I have need to be translated with one of the online tools that were mentioned above>???? is that my issue?

OK, first of all, remember that the password for your router and the WEP key are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. Don't confuse them.

The router password is used to log in to your router and make changes. I think this is what you mean by your ASCII password. The PS3 doesn't need it.

What it DOES need is your WEP key. However, when you say that your WEP password is the 10-digit number below the serial number, what you're actually referring to is a MAC address.

It sounds to me like your router isn't use WEP security, but simple MAC address filtering. This isn't very secure, but whatever. Try telling the PS3 to use MAC address security instead of WEP. If that STILL doesn't work, sorry bro... you'll prolly need to call The Geek Squad or the Nerd Herd.

Why not used WPA? it's easier IMHO and a touch more security because WEP keys are hackable in seconds.. while WPA change all the time...

Make sure that you are using the 1st given WEP key. When I generated my 128-bit WEP key I was pulling my hair out at why it wouldn't connect anymore. I don't know if this is relevant to your scenario, but it was the solution to my similar trouble.

I got it all figured out, and as a little bonus, the mail-lady brought my HDMI cable, so I got to see HD!!!! it's great...... I even popped in COD4, and it looks pretty good.... I'll still probably leave the gaming to my wife's little bro though.....

I'm a technical idiot..... I don't think anything in my sig is too "high end" the sony receiver is a piece of junk in most opinions probably.... the SACD player is easy enough for a chimp to operate, the Remote does more features than I'll ever use, and speakers are speakers (not in quality/clarity, but in ease of use..... even electrostatics are easy enough to run) The PS3 took me awhile just to set up properly.....

I had to search the back of my T.V. for the HDMI input because I'd never seen one!!!

On first impressions on the Blu-Ray, I'm very pleased..... but I knew I would be!!! I look forward to checking out the upscaling too, we'll see what all this little guy can do.
