Yes, The Last Jedi is a giant turd, but we can discuss how awful it is in the regular Star Wars thread.

It's not about TLJ. Well ok it is kinda. But yes I do think a thread about this video showing that when it comes to "representation", there's a hierarchy and black men are near the bottom of it. I think it's a toss up between Fin and Fury as to which of them was s**t upon from a greater height. But sadly only one of them realizes while the other is asking for more.

I haven't followed Boyega's opinions about The Sequel Trilogy, but I always did feel like his character was subordinated in his own subplot for the sake of Rose. I say this as someone who doesn't hate The Last Jedi or Rose with a burning passion.

What's funny (or sad) is that he thought Boyega was alone in feeling this way. It's only relatively recently he realized that many others had similar feelings.

Actor lands major movie franchise roles, promotes it as contracted and years later says what he really thought of said movie.

In other news, water is wet.

I don't disagree with either comment above, but I still think they miss the point of the video. Of course the thread title didn't help lol.

In recent times, modern fiction always has a bait and switch moment where what the audience thought we were getting is "subverted". What's a little unusual is that in this case the switch also affected one of the main stars of the movie. An actor who was supposed to be a co-lead.

Could you give examples on how Nick Fury was subverted like the Finn character was?

Fury has been a bad-ass and has plenty of moments since his reveal in IM1.

Folks want a Lando series and Finn was supposed to be that new dude on the scene.

Christ, people are still whining about this? To the point this couldn't even be posted in The Last Jedi thread and it needed its own? ****in' get over it already.

Personally and i don't want to drag this out much, but the entire sequel trilogy came undone after Force Awakens which imo was the perfect reboot/continuation the series could have asked for.

I thought the BS "subvert" expectations hurt the movies because they went against the established nature of some major characters and ended up a convenient writers clutch for others introduced. Poe Dameron being an amazing pilot for example is more of something they claim and try to then show off to justify with one scene, so i felt like they could have done a bit more than that for him. Rey was a mysterious child they built up and by the end, they just undid her unique background mystery with a cheap cannon fodder idea for the Rise of Skywalker. Kylo Ren, they never really fully established his dark side turn in a meaningful manner like say how Darth Vader got a full arc over a trilogy. Finn, he literally got sidelined in and Rose seemed like a tickbox exercise to hit a diversity quota and market to China imo for more profits.

All in all, the sequel trilogy was a hugely wasted opportunity.

I will only give one example because only one example is needed. Nick Fury is not "a" spy, he is supposed to be "The" Spy. A super-spy of sorts whose "secrets have secrets". But in this series they say
[Show spoiler]that if it wasn't for the skrulls he wouldn't have the same reputation.
The example I gave elsewhere is like if Iron Man 2 ended with the Russian scientist's son winning and it turns out that Tony was a fraud taking credit for the Russian scientist's work.

As I said, the thread title doesn't help. The video isn't so much about how crap TLJ is. Most of us already know that. I think the video did a decent job of partially exposing the "diversity" hypocrisy by showing how Boyega was screwed across the last two movies. Remember this?

The poster on the right is for the Chinese market.

I honestly think minus the absence of Harrison Ford who really is the only reason I like SW - The Last Jedi is still the best sequel trilogy movie - good writing (just not if you love star wars) excellent visuals, good camera work, better fight sequences - the opening the only thing I'd have changed.

I think I get why some non Star Wars people like it "in isolation", but that's kind of the problem. I saw TLJ on the morning of its release and it just left me confused. I spent the next couple of weeks defending Jonson's choices. But looking back I think that even a casual like myself understood that TLJ didn't fit with the Star Wars universe. But at the time I didn't understand how or why that was the case.
