Default Component & HDMI

If I'm using HDMI from my cable box to my Plasma, do I need my S-Video cables connected from my receiver to my Plamsa also? I've unplugged them from my receiver just to see what happens and it doesn't seem to affect the signal at all. In other words, unplugging them doesn't affect the picture.

Not really knowing your setup, I'm not sure what the s-video is there for.

Do you have any video going into your receiver? If so, what? If not, than the S-Video is definitely pointless.

If you do have video going into the receiver, do you have anyway of having component or hdmi out instead of s-video?

I apologize, I don't know why I'm talking S-Video. I have component going from the receiver to the Plasma. No HDMI on the Bose receiver. So, would I need the component (blue, red, green) cables from receiver to Plasma if I'm using HDMI from the cable box to the Plasma?

Again, it really depends. If you have video going into your receiver, it has to get to the plasma somehow, so I'd say yes you need the component cable.

If you have all your video running straight into the TV or into the cable box and then to the tv though, than no you wouldn't need it.

What other kinds of video playing devices do you have hooked up and what are they hooked up to?

I've got HDMI from the cable box to the Plasma, Digital audio Cable from Cable Box to receiver, Blu-Ray connected via HDMI direct to Plasma and Blu-Ray connected to receiver via Optical cable. These are the only things connected.

I can disconnect the component cables from the receiver, leaving them connected to the back of the Plasma, and everything works as if they were still connected with absolutely no PQ change or audio change. I've probably answered my own question but I want to make sure there isn't something I'm missing here.

Just a follow-up. I didn't even think about disconnecting my component cables going from the receiver to the Plasma and the component cables going from the Cable Box to the Plasma when I hooked up the Cable Box via HDMI cable to the Plasma. I've disconnected all of the component cables now and it's obvious the HDMI is carrying everything I need.

it sounds like all of your video is going straight to the plasma so you won't need any cables from the receiver to the tv (which it looks like you already figured out).

I figured this was the case, but you never know when someone still has a regular dvd player or even an old vhs player hooked up through their receiver to the tv

Yeah, it just never dawned that after getting connected via HDMI I should do away with my component cabling. I've had those cables for so long now I've gotten very used to seeing them there.

I'm sitting the other day watching a video and it just registered that maybe I don't need those component cables any longer, so I started disconnecting them and I wasn't seeing anything detrimental going on with picture. Kind of a "duh" moment.

Anyway, thanks for the response and all is well in the media room once again.
