Default The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) coming from Kino

Quote:
Blu-ray Extras Include:

Remastered in HD by Paramount Pictures – From a 4K Scan of the 35mm Fine Grain

Audio Commentary by Author/Film Historian Alan K. Rode

Trailers

Optional English Subtitles
Quote:
Barbara Stanwyck, the legendary actress who defined the film noir femme fatale in 1944’s Double Indemnity, returns to the role of the deadly seductress in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. When streetwise gambler Sam Masterson (Van Heflin, Shane) returns to his hometown of Iverstown, childhood sweetheart Martha (Stanwyck) assumes he has come to blackmail her over the suspicious death of her aunt, which he witnessed years earlier. Thus begins a dangerous game of cat and mouse, in which the wealthy and powerful Martha, whose husband is the local district attorney (the film debut of Kirk Douglas, I Walk Alone), tries to threaten, connive and seduce the truth from Sam’s clenched lips. Lizabeth Scott (Pitfall) co-stars as a hard-boiled woman on probation whose attempts to go straight land her, ironically, in Iverstown’s vortex of circling sharks. Directed by Lewis Milestone (The General Died at Dawn), scripted by Robert Rossen (The Hustler) and scored by Miklós Rózsa (Spellbound), Martha Ivers is a razor-witted dance of death that represents Hollywood suspense at its most sublimely entertaining.

I've seen some pretty negative reviews of the Film Chest release from 10 years ago so I held off on purchasing that one. I hope the Kino release will be better.

Is this an Universal noir? If so, then I would think it could end up on Indicator Universal Noir #2

It will definitely be better. Paramount owns the original elements, and released a DVD of it that was even superior to Film Chest's BD. Expect a solid upgrade.

No, it's Paramount noir Also, I think it's too big of a title to be put in one of Indicator's sets. I think they'd do a standalone like they did for The Big Heat and The Lady From Shanghai.

I remember watching this on A&E back in the 1980s. It will be nice to see it again in this fresh scan.

Since it's a master provided by Paramount, I'm sure it'll be the same

You never know for sure. Eureka released Five Graves to Cairo around the same time Kino Lorber did, and Eureka even claimed at first that their disc would have the same new 4K transfer the KL disc would. Right before Eureka's disc was released, the text about the new master vanished, and their disc ended up having the ancient HD master from the DVD, not the new 4K master, which ended up being exclusive to the KL disc.

All I'm saying is that it's never safe to assume with these things, especially when KL announces a new 4K transfer and a foreign label announces the same film around the same time. It's better to wait until the actual disc has been reviewed.

Imprint's recent release of The Counterfeit Traitor is an ancient DVD-era HD transfer, while KL's upcoming disc is announced to have a new 4K transfer from the negative. Obviously those are coming out months apart, but it's still a similar situation.

Really hope Imprint gets the new master because a) I'll be buying the box anyway and b) it easily bests Kino for extras.
