Question ps3 & dts hdma...clarification please

ok, i am 90% positive that i will be getting the ps3 as my first bd player but i am just a little concerned with the lack of dts-hdma

if i were to put in let's say Die Hard in my ps3 (which uses dta hdma)...

what audio codec would i be hearing since the ps3 can't decode dts hdma??

would the audio i hear still be hd?

and in your own opinions, do you believe the ps3 can receive a firmware update in the future to fix this?

(btw, i will be getting an hdmi 7.1 receiver with my bd player/ps3, if that makes a difference in your answers)

thanks in advance everyone

At this time, you (and the rest of the PS3 owners) would get the core DTS track at 1.5Mpbs. I have a PSS3, DH4 and a receiver capable of decoding DTS HDMA and have confirmed the 1.5Mpbs audio track. It is not bad, but I am sure the MA track is much better.

There have been many rumors that Sony could upgrade the PS3 to decode DTS HDMA, but no true evidence to this effect yet.

The PS3 rocks in many ways and one of them is that it can be upgraded for future releases.

Until the PS3 is updated (before summer is likely), you'll just hear the DTS core. Nothing wrong with that

yes it will be updated

Once it received the DTSHDMA firmware decoding capability you can listen to 5.1 PCM soundtrack.

For the time being believe me 5.1 DTS core is more beautiful and far better than Dolby digital or even dolby digital Plus.

The core is still a Hi Def soound track, but not Master Audio, not as good as it could be.
I hope they add this to the PS3 soon.

so would you all agree that the ps3 is a worthy investment?

and also, i know this is a little off topic but does the 40gb really run cooler/quieter than the 80gb? and if so, is this noticable when viewing blu rays?

What is hd for sound? (the hd in the name is what it is a name!)

Seriously, it's not lossless if this is what you mean (DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby TrueHD, and linear pcm are lossless) but at 1.5 mbps, it's way better that standard Dolby Digital which is limited at 640 kbps.

Also for information, you could get 1.5 mbps from DVD DTS soundtrack if they were encode at that bit rate but I don't think too many were made.

I thought I read in this forum that the PS3 chip was not capable of DTSMA regardless of firmware. any clarification in this?

My understanding of it is it can't pass it, but it should be able to convert it to PCM like it does with TrueHD, when they do an update... I could be wrong but that's what I have gathered from a lot of other forums on this topic

A blu-ray player/media center/web browser/game console for 400$ in my mind is a pretty good deal! (I bought it for 599$ last year and for me it was a pretty good deal.) And so far it's one of the fastest player and the one that is the most upgradeable!

I think if you might ever possibly use it for games, it is worth every bit. Probably still even if you only use it for movies.

Believe me you will never notice the fan noise unless you are sitting beside your PS3 .

YES PS3 is the only and worthy investement you can do if you really want to experience BD .Got 1.1 profile later 2.0 profile and later on DTSHDMA decoding

if you are asking for more duties a PS3 to do it ,i'm sure engineers at sony lab will give it to you through a simple firmware update.

PS3 is just a complete multimedia home entertainment in High Definition.

The PS3 cannot pass bitstream DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD (due to the fact that the HDMI is 1.3a and not 1.3b) however it can decode Dolby TrueHD internally and send it as pcm to the receiver and we're hopping that it will someday decode DTS-HD MA as well and send it as pcm.

What i mean DTS 1.5mbs is better than Dolby Digital and even Dolby Digital Plus.

Dolby Digital Plus is a step up from Dolby Digital but higher bit rate sound.
