Default Deeper (Underwater Supernatural Thriller.)

MGM has landed the rights to Deeper, a supernatural thriller starring Bradley Cooper, Deeper, which is being directed by Kornel Mundruczo (White Gods) and is written by Max Landis, “…involves a former astronaut hired to take a submersible to the lowest point in the ocean. As the submersible gets closer to its destination, supernatural events transpire.”

The script is being described as having elements of Gravity and some are saying that it’s a contender for an Oscar, which would be a welcome event!

The film is being produced by Landis and David Goyer.

Production said to start in 2017.

Dammit! Why does this have to sound interesting. Max Landis is the only person in Hollywood I have decided to actively avoid seeing anything they are involved with (well, maybe Cameron Diaz too). Hopefully it's a major bust, so I won't have to force myself to see it.

MGM Moving Forward On Max Landis’ ‘Deeper'

Quote:
Everest filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur is in talks to direct the MGM thriller Deeper, Variety reports.

The film follows a former astronaut, who was hired to take a submersible to the deepest part of the ocean. Supernatural events transpire as the vehicle gets closer to its destination.

The script, which sounds like a mix between The Abyss and DeepStar Six, is being described as having elements of Gravity.

Bright, Victor Frankenstein and Chronicle scribe Max Landis penned the script and will also produce with David Goyer, Kevin Turren, and Addictive Pictures.

You all know You’re going to end up seeing this movie but it won’t be until a year from now or two years from now when it’s on the Syfy network for free. I know that’s what I’ll be doing.

Idris Elba In Talks to Star in Max Landis Supernatural Thriller 'Deeper' (Exclusive)
FEBRUARY 01, 2019 10:36am PT by Borys Kit

Baltasar Kormakur, the filmmaker behind 'Everest' and 'Adrift,' is sitting behind the camera for the feature.

Idris Elba is going on a deep-sea dive.

The actor is in negotiations to star in the supernatural sci-fi thriller Deeper being made by MGM.

Baltasar Kormakur, the filmmaker behind survival dramas Everest and Adrift, is sitting behind the camera for the feature, which has a script written by Max Landis.

Deeper is supernatural thriller that centers on a disgraced astronaut, to be played by Elba, who is on a deep-sea dive exploring a newly discovered trench but soon finds himself confronted by a sinister and dangerous force. The tone has been described as being similar to recent hits Gravity and The Martian.

Elba’s casting brings the storied project one step closer to actually going in front of cameras. MGM paid seven figures to acquire the script in 2016 from the high-priced scribe Landis. The project also had Bradley Cooper and Gal Gadot attached to star and Kornel Mundruczo, the Hungarian director behind White God, attached to direct. However, one by one the players fell off and MGM was forced to decide whether to let it go or rebuild. It chose the latter.

David Goyer, Kevin Turen, Russell Ackerman, John Schoenfelder and Landis are producing the project. The heavily in-demand Elba is currently filming Working Title and Universal’s adaptation of Cats, in which he plays the feline Macavity. After having wrapped the villain role in Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw. Last year saw him appear in Avengers: Infinity War and topline another season of detective show Luther.

Elba is repped by WME and Hertz Lichtenstein.

Hmm...sounds interesting. Max Landis is, well, he's someone that has some good ideas with rather flawed outcomes. I did enjoy Chronicle and Dirk Gently, and was mostly a fan of Bright.

And seeing complaint about Landis, I know nepotism goes a long way, but it's not like John Landis is a god among filmmakers these days. No need to touch upon his past controversy, but notice how he hasn't made anything since Burke and Hare? Per his interview with Kevin Pollak, he was pissed that the studio refused to do a normal theatrical run and went to VOD with it. If he had pull, that would not have happened and he'd probably have another narrative feature out by now.

According to an MGM representative, the studio, which was producing Max Landis' underwater horror film 'Deeper' with Idris Elba set to star, has dropped the project following the emotional and sexual abuse allegations against Landis that have recently re-emerged.

They say this, but I’ve also read reports that this fell apart before all the Landis stuff came out. So they’re probably jumping on this to cover the movie exploding.

Well I hope they heavily rewrite Landis' script.

I really really dislike the guy. I'll say he has great concepts. But I'm glad he's out of Hollywood. Can't write dialogue or characters at all. And he's just a terrible person.
