Default Ghoulies Reboot

Original ‘Ghoulies’ Creators Hoping to Get Sony on Board With a Franchise Reboot

Quote:
Empire Pictures’ lovable creature feature Ghoulies just turned 35 this year, a film that went on to spawn a four-movie franchise that ended with 1994’s Ghoulies IV. That means we haven’t seen or heard from the franchise in over 25 years, but the original creators are now determined to bring the tiny rubber monsters back to life.

Director/Co-Writer Luca Bercovici and Producer/Co-Writer Jefery Levy are asking rights holders Sony Pictures to allow them to reboot the Ghoulies franchise with a brand new movie, and a petition for that cause is now live over on Change.org.

The petition reads, “Bercovici and Levy are urging fans to climb the porcelain throne and support the #GhouliesReboot campaign in order to show Sony that audiences want a new entry to the series which originally ran from 1985 to 1994. Once we have hit our signature target this petition will be forwarded to Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra, and hopefully discussions can start between Luca Bercovici, Jefery Levy and Steve Bersch at Screen Gems (a division of Sony) regarding production on a new and exciting Ghoulies reboot.”

“Ghoulies transcended its original generation and was embraced by the following generation who loved the weirdly strange and goofy world of the Ghoulies. The cult of Ghoulies has grown legion over the decades; this legion of old fans and a whole generation of new fans crave for a new Ghoulies for the new millennium,” says Bercovici.

At the time of this writing, the petition has been signed by over 120 Ghoulies fans. So if you want more Ghoulies, sign it and pass it along. As we always like to say, it can’t hurt!

It can't be any worse than the original. Right?

It most certainly could.

And Sony has the rights now?

Thumbs down

If they have to beg for signatures on a petition, this isn't anywhere close to actually being made.

What's next, a Kickstarter to raise the budget?

‘Ghoulies’ Co-Creator Jefery Levy Explains How He’d Like to Reboot the Franchise

Quote:
A few weeks ago, original Ghoulies creators Jefery Levy (Writer/Producer) and Luca Bercovici (Writer/Director) initiated an online campaign to persuade Sony to reboot the Ghoulies franchise after the series has laid dormant in the proverbial toilet bowl for over 25 years.

Speculation as to the concept of the new reboot has garnered much online discussion, and it only made sense to get the inside story from Jefery Levy himself.

Bloody Disgusting: Your reboot announcement has garnered a lot of online publicity.

Jefery Levy: It did, I couldn’t believe all the online attention.

BD: What are your plans for the proposed reboot?

JL: I wanna reboot the franchise. Not just one movie, I wanna try and make a three-picture deal.

BD: What would a Ghoulies reboot look like?

JL: What would that look like today? Without giving too much away, one can truthfully say that “Ghoulies” has become a part of pop culture, and it is this same pop culture that becomes both the milieu and the next victim for the “Ghoulies” of the 21st century; music, fame, technology, social media, all are grist for the “Ghoulies” mill. No icon too big to fiendishly destroy, no cow too sacred to be attacked with tiny, slavering jaws.

“They’ll get you in the end” will take on an entirely new and fiendishly funny meaning.

We will of course use live-action puppets and animatronics. But in addition to that, we will try to employ every other technology that exists right now – if it works for the movie – which is substantial. We’re thinking about holographic sequences with the Ghoulies. I don’t know if you’ve seen holographic technology with concerts and stuff, but it’s pretty amazing.

BD: The Gorillaz utilized that for a time.

JL: Yeah, they did. And of course, there’s a virtual reality game. So many things we can do with Ghoulies now. If we did this with Disney there would be a Ghoulies ride. By the way, I don’t necessarily want to do this movie for Sony, I just want them to give us the rights back or to make a deal on the rights. We don’t necessarily have to deal with them. I think we can take it to a number of places, and we will find someone who will make the movie. Whether it’s Netflix or Universal or Disney or Paramount or any of the other studios.

BD: On the original movie you and Luca flipped a coin to see who would direct. Who would take the reins this time round?

JL: Luca and I will probably serve as executive producers on this and we will hire some young hot writer and director. We’re old guys now so we’re gonna serve as executive producers to make this happen and oversee it, we’ll be very involved with the story and overseeing the entire franchise but I do not think Luca will be directing. Luca and I have already talked about this, there are so many younger people who well versed in the world of all these special effects now.

BD: Is there a reason it took so long to spearhead a new Ghoulies?

JL: Luca and I have been talking about it for the last ten years, but we just kind of thought it was right. I saw him in LA last Christmas, and we talked about how Ghoulies would be a great reboot because all the studios are rebooting all their franchises so I started trying to track down the rights – which became the most complicated detective investigation ever. I tracked it down to Lionsgate and an old friend of mine is the CEO of Lionsgate and he said, “I’m gonna put you in touch with my guy who handles all the rights of all our stuff” and he said, “We own the rights for 3, but we sold the rights for the next one to Sony, and Sony distributed IV so that’s what brought us to Sony. And they did indeed distribute Ghoulies IV. Once I had that information, I started contacting Sony and letting everyone online know that Sony is the place we need to deal with.

I think that a Ghoulies reboot, using current technology – with a little bit more money than we used to have – could be a very, very financially successful franchise for anyone that does it and super fun for the fans. We don’t have John Buechler but there are a lot of John Buechler protégé’s out there. We would definitely include puppetry; we wouldn’t abandon puppets but we would also use all the other things in the current tool kit of special effects. The whole thing has to be funny, with some scary stuff. When we were making Ghoulies, I considered it more of a comedy than anyone else. I thought it was really funny you know. I thought there’s only one way to really sell this kind of as a horror comedy – not taking it too seriously. And of course, I would love to have Michael Des Barres be in it as well. Michael Des Barres is still around, and he would definitely be invited to be back in the franchise.

Luca and I have grown up a lot and I think this will be super high class. It will be Ghoulies platinum… put it that way.

I would love a Ghoulies Reboot! With awesome puppets and animatronics. CGI could maybe be used for like running or jumping if needed, have no problem with CGI if done well.

I doubt Sony still has the rights. The Ghoulies IV that they distributed has since been released on DVD by Echo Bridge.

Fish Ghoulie and Cat Ghoulie are both two of the best Ghoulies that have recently been made into full scale puppet props for $199 each I see.

Fish Ghoulie has always been the leader of the pack.

Ghoulies 2 which takes place at the carnival is an entertaining film and in my view, the best Ghoulies movie that really works well. It's more like PG13 than R rated. No blood spurting and they even cut away from some of the deaths.

The first one is okay, but the third one, I don't even know how that got an R rating. The Ghoulie tosses a blast ball into a guy's truck, he looks at it and it blasts apart the truck, but he's still sitting in it, smoking fumes and alive and well, like a Tom and Jerry cartoon. I couldn't watch the whole film and had to skip ahead because it had way too much of the boring college kids and not enough of the Ghoulies.

I don't know if a reboot will work, but I really hope they at least get the look of the Ghoulies right. Set it in the Carnival again. That's a great setting for Ghoulies. Or an amusement park or something.

This would be the closest thing we would get to a new Gremlins film wouldn't it?

If they asked that question in the 1980's whenever walking into a VHS rental store, then yes, Ghoulies are a part of pop culture.

Yeah, I was thinking about that while watching Ghoulies 2 the other day. That's the best movie of the three Ghoulies films IMO, but they reminded me of Gremlins, as they intentionally create mischief against humans, while being funny to watch at the same time based on their mini monster designs.

Ghoulies 2 (Carnival)
Ghoulies 1
Ghoulies 3 Go to College

But yeah, I'd like to see a new Gremlins movie where the Gremlins are 100% in tune with the first film (More evil than funny most times) rather than the 2nd which went way too far (tried to be more funny than evil, more of a family friendly film unlike the first classic) IMO with the characters (a talking Gremlin especially).

Ghoulies 2 I'd say is something the whole family can watch, as it's almost like a PG13 film. Set in the Carnival.
Ghoulies 1, R.
Ghoulies 3, college type humor pranks mostly. PG13.

Ghoulies 4, I just saw the trailer. Looks like they forgot to include Ghoulies almost.

Finally watched almost all of Ghoulies 3 just to accomplish that task, and it's definitely missed the mark of the prior film. It takes the path of Gremlins 2, and the Ghoulies now talk and do pranks like the three Stooges, not kidding as Fish Ghoulie bumps the skulls of the two other Ghoulies. And there are only 3 now in Ghoulies 3. They got rid of the slug and the flying Ghoulie.

Wrong direction for the series with 3. I don't think I'll see Ghoulies 4 any time soon. Plus in 3, they changed the classic look of Fish Ghoulie, the green guy with the round head and fish tail. In 3, they wear clothes and hats and act like college kids.

If the reboot eventually happens, I hope they go with the style of Ghoulies 2.
